comom is one of them and the daily comedy News podcast is the other one I love your show I will never never not endorse your show um it seems to be picking up steam I uh some of the presents on Facebook and things like that there's been some interesting people who have kind of joined on and been been watching what it is that you're doing daily comedy podcast is going well hey yeah we have a Facebook group everyone's encouraged to join Facebook uh it is daily comedy News podcast group uh the AI will ask you a few questions to make sure you're not a pornbot um and if you can get through our very very difficult screening process please feel encouraged to join I I've been excited because the listeners themselves are starting conversation so it's not me just going hey did you watch the latest special so I I'm more of a fan of the the other topics that come up a good one that came up and look look at us already now talking about Letterman a good one that came up was and we're we're borrowing heavily from a vulture article here should a comedian do Super Bowl halftime and if so who and I thought it was a great topic I I think we kind of landed on Chris Rock or Adam Sandler why those two you have to have somebody who's big enough that you don't have to explain to the world who this is so like Nate briet is not there yet but there's also if you're going to have a comedian do Super Bowl Halftime there has to be a no pwn rock and roll element to it you know it's got to be somebody with energy and Chris Rock has energy and Sandler whose comedy I'm not a fan of could come out and do those high energy songs and really work the crowd whereas Jerry Seinfeld or John malany standing behind a microphone Jim Gaffigan telling jokes it's not going to work at the Super Bowl NOP uh the observational stuff um I think would get lost for a variety of reasons uh you know with the crowd the excitement all the things that are going on and whatnot um that makes sense the high energy Sandler I feel hey and I love Adam Sandler I I actually love Adam Sandler uh he was right I was right in the crosshairs uh during my high school years of when he was in Saturday Night Live and so like operam man and and and cinjun man and all of his his his his update characters I really really like them plus he's got a very special place in my heart because of his last song that he did uh during the last week of Letterman uh Late Show with David Letterman tapings that Letterman song that he did was just absolutely fantastic I have a dream to have him on here and have him sing that Letterman song again but I don't know man a Super Bowl crowd if Adam Sandler started singing one of his songs he would have to thread a very very thin needle for that crowd to not turn on him my idea is Burr I think I think Bill Burr every once in a while just for fun I'll just go and watch the uh there was this there was this time where he was he was in Philadelphia and there was a crowd of people that were there that he was just oh he was just taking the piss out of them for like 15 minutes and then for the last few minutes he he got a back back he actually won them back he won this Philadelphia this very Ruckus Philadelphia crowd back I think for football um he's a guy that that could probably Wrangle that crowd he's got that um Alpha Male Sports you know Boston aggression that I think it would take the rock the rock rock and roll that you're talking about that bill bill bur would be my pick I think yeah he's got the right energy I I don't think that's an absurd pick at all um plus he speaks the language of football I'm just I a lot for Sandler which is a really weird thing for me to do if people listen to my podcast uh Sandler could bring out uh straight musical acts and incorporate them into what he does he's got musical chop so he could bring out somebody out of the music industry and it wouldn't be weird and then it might be more traditional you know the other one and I think it's too late in his career now the other one that would have been amazing would be Weird Al absolutely oh yeah yeah he could he could entertain that crowd he could get that crowd and entertain them I know yeah abs that is a very very good one as well um you know and and I mean I I've always wondered why Kimmel you know and I understand the network things and whatnot but but Kimmel has been involved with the you know NFL before I think Kimmel has a um would would would definitely have a a place there if he were there were the host of a of a halftime show you know Kimmel I think could be the guy to do something like that but I think there's a network red tape there that would Pro that would make that um an impossibility Now ABC ESPN does have the Super Bowl in two years it's NBC next year but but again with Kimmel nothing against Kimmel it's the wrong energy for Super Bowl Halftime yeah he's too he's too subdued he's too uh yeah yeah like like let kiml host the Oscars for the next 30 Years and that's not a dig at Conan we haven't seen um how good Conan is or not at it but Kimmel was fine and I'm a big believer and if it's not broken don't fix it I would have just kept rolling Kimmel but I think Kimmel didn't want to do it this year yeah well it's going to be neat to see Conan um in this in this environment I'm I'm very excited uh about you know from from everything I'm hearing the preparation is is nothing short of Breakneck and uh I I'm very very excited to see what Conan is going to bring to the Oscars this year and I mean he joins that lineage of uh you know of Johnny Carson of David Letterman of course uh you know his Infamous appearance which is which was a lot better than he lets on it actually was a good appearance back in the day um but yeah I'm I'm I'm excited to see that um super curious if there will be you know C cameos and things like that um but the whole speaking of cameos by the way how about a segue here we've uh one of the reasons why this conversation was facilitated was this week in in comedy but particularly in late night comedy there we've had a couple of big cameos that have happened yeah I I mean I let's flip all the cards I I saw the Letterman appearance on Fallon and immediately stalk the heck out of you I was so excited to see that appearance and let me just jump in the pool here here's why I was so excited to see it that was my Dave that showed up I can't really put my finger on it it wasn't CBS establishment Letterman that was NBC Letterman on NBC kind of Loosey Goosey immediately back in the groove with Paul Schaefer like not a minute had passed um I I I'm not anti- Jimmy but just uh the the talent comparison there with you know Dave just shadowing over Jimmy uh but but I felt like if you somehow had a magic W and said hey Dave you want a 12:30 NBC show it starts Monday he and Paul would be right back in the groove yep yeah I well and I I'm I believe that he's getting reps in that uh particular voice because of the barber gain show because of the show that's on YouTube that they are L like I I it's not here I was hoping it would be here this morning although Paul and the band are on the show so I'm wearing the old school world's most dangerous band shirt today but I've got a Barbara gain show shirt that is going to be here any day I was going to wear it today if if it did show up the fact that he's there and I mean it's it's the Letterman YouTube channel here's videos new videos with Dave but they're calling it The Barber gain show they're selling it that way they're actually putting merch out there to me that is a vintage uh 1230 kind of move and and and and the terminology is that that Dave is kind of the guest and Barbara is the star of the show which is so funny on uh I feel that that voice was very present um on Monday night Dave comes out what did he call he he compared yeah we didn't do any of the Chuck-E-Cheese crap or something like that was such a dig at what everybody hates on the Fallon Tonight Show for it was that was brutal I love how much you're laughing at that it was brutal but it's the thing everybody's thinking oh man yes and I mean on his way out Dave would talk about okay well I see them playing games on these shows and what is that is that what it takes to stay like on his way out he would he would talk about that and maybe not lament that might not be the right word but he would observe is this what it takes is this what I have to do now to a late night Joe and the Chuck E cheese was such a perfect way to sum that up I loved it so much I also liked his line about uh he was working with Tik Tock he did a big deal with the Chinese government that was it was again he was just in his element and vamping and loose and the chemistry with Paul and basically Jimmy was an observer on his own show which again there's nothing wrong with I mean that's straight out of corson's book right let let the guest be great and then everybody goes did you see Fallon so not a dig at Jimmy Jimmy understood what to do there you know you've got David Letterman don't try and top them that that's a lesson back at Sirius when I used to program the comedy channels yep you know we we didn't try to outfunny The Comedians and that's what I try and do on daily comedy news podcasts like I'm not a comedian no kidding uh you know I don't try and and be funnier and you know I recently had Jimmy has recently had Larry the Cable Guy on I don't try and go yuck for yuck with Larry what are you crazy he's a pro like you know I I'm the straight man who asks the question so I think Fallon played his role perfectly with a killer appearance by vintage Dave I'm so excited about vintage Dave yeah me too uh it was it was there was a lot of taking that segment apart and I mean the observation that I've always had when I watch Letterman um you know Letterman makes a line about the rehearsal you know oh this is going to be the best rehearsal you know this and you wonder how much was rehearsed I would I would imagine nothing um you know I I feel like there was a whole menu of things that of directions that Dave could have gone you know they he tried he tried to bring the guy who was throwing him the tortillas you know he was like come here come here he was trying to get the guy on camera um there was a person with hey do you want to tell some jokes there was a guy with actual Q cards rather than a teleprompter who actually was there for for potential for jokes you know Dave brings him on camera like if felt like um if the chaos was because this is one of those things we talk about on the show too um one of the things that Merill loved to do with Dave back at the very beginning was surprise him and that went away very quickly Dave did not want to be surprised about anything but the the kind of concession or the balance that was struck was that no matter what happened if he was figing surprise or throwing out one of those you know shots uh right right from the hip you know these these responses that Dave is probably better at than in almost any human in the planet um that it would the audience would would not know that he was not surprised about something and that's one of the the feelings that I felt that that vintage Dave that you're talking about on Monday night was I felt like it was just okay you don't know how much of this was scripted versus how much of it is random and how much Dave but regardless you look at the Fun Dave is having and it is that's that it was it was that exact feeling that we loved and I would say even took for granted every night at 12:30 and then at 11:30 for years it hasn't been around for a long time so let me put on my producer hat and you know and this is all just an educated guess now it might come out that Dave came by at noon and that was the most rehear thing ever to your point of Dave doesn't like to be surprised but I would imagine some sort of conversation hey Paul's doing it can someone reach out to Dave and see if he wants to do a cameo or maybe Dave reaches out to Paul and says hey could I come by who knows then I you know hey Dave we rehears at 3:30 or whenever they rehearse I I don't imagine Dave wanting to hang around 30 Rock for hours because then there's a buzz of David Letterman's in the building etc etc uh I don't think this appearance was pre-announced I didn't see anything on social I found out about it prepping the podcast the next morning so you know I don't see Dave wanting to hang around the building for two hours then on the other side somebody goes to Jimmy and says Dave said he'll do it but he won't do rehearsal and F just going yeah that's fine like it you know it's not like they booked you or me and like we got to get this right like all right Dave David Letterman's going to wing it on a late night show it'll be fine absolutely I mean clearly the tortillas somebody bought the tortillas um you know and and that might be something that you know Dave okay what's something that they've done on the show like okay yeah I'd like to smack his face with tortillas okay let's you know just very very very loose but then once he comes out it's it's it's almost improvisation like let's just have some fun with this and go am I going to tell some jokes yeah no no I'm not going to tell some jokes and he goes in another Direction and and he was famous for that you know when when people um on the show on the crew would be planted into the audience say for a um for a mailbag segment or a a you know a Q&A segment or whatever it was a a plant many times they had to they had to have a backstory um and and they were always told very very doesn't matter who it was whether they were an intern all the way up if they were in the audience they were they were um you know being part of the show interacting with the show they had to have a bit of a backstory and one of the things that Dave would do uh oh yes ma'am you have a question for me and then he would start asking questions about where where they were from and going down the pathway to test that backstory a little bit and and again that's another part like these are little uh ways of describing the energy of that show and what made that show so good that was another feeling that I felt um that night as well and it's just never mind the fact having Paul there with the with the world's most dangerous manand playing their standards I mean I watched again last night and and and Jimmy hasn't used Paul on a in a in in a bit yet but just hearing them and feeling them and hearing Paul's in the background it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and it's just a it's one of those beautiful throwback moments to when I don't even know I'm trying to com I'm trying to compare it to say my dad watching Carson who would it be that shows up maybe when Jerry Lewis showed up or or or someone you know of the of of an era that Johnny looked up to and they would show up on the show and it kind of felt that energy as well so is this out of Dave system now or can we convince Netflix to write a check and get Dave and Paul to do four of these just do a week wouldn't it be great you know m mlan is going weekly I mean and Netflix is experimenting with that they're experimenting with all sorts of stuff if melan's going weekly why couldn't why couldn't Dave do one a week for a month yeah exactly something like that uh so let me get into the psychology of Dave here I'm gonna ask you a loaded question that I I have uh 99% confidence that you'll answer correctly what is your last memory of Johnny Carson on late night television uh on Dave Show when he showed up on Dave show and uh was top but yeah it was absolutely phenomenal it was a I mean people just talk about how awesome Johnny was in um you know in that appearance and you know sitting behind the desk for a second and being na na n and getting up you know that kind of thing so was this Dave doing that this is David Letterman going back on NBC to the tonight's show y late in his career is was this Dave's Johnny appearance you know what I mean yeah I I have thought about that um every single time he's appeared on one of these shows Kimmel it's a little bit different he seems to have kind of a rhythm with Kimmel um he makes a trip to La for whatever reason many times there's a Kimmel appearance that shows up or Kimmel goes to New York many times he'll he'll show up to me there's a rhythm there and there's a there's a there's a separate relationship uh Jimmy has warmed his way into you know into the wiring of of of Dave you know with with with his years and years and years of dedicated um I don't know what what you want to call it servitude almost um but but when he showed up on um on late show or on The Late Show with Steven coar I 100% had that had that feeling Dave felt bigger than the show it was spectacular they both now that one there differing from the Johnny appearance Johnny appeared on on Letterman when they did a um when late show went to LA um about a year into the run and uh you know it was a cameo when Dave showed up up on The Late Show with step coar they built the entire show around Dave they gave him three segments um it was Dave's one of Dave's favorite bands and Dave actually did the intro with Steph for them the national um so it was a very different thing but it had a very similar feeling to me to me it elevated the feeling of that show like this is a big deal um you know and so I I kind of feel that way about every time every time Dave does one of these he's 77 I mean there's there's only a you know there's only a certain amount of times that he can do that but The Tonight Show like when he shows up on Seth that's really great because it's it's it's it's his lineage it's late night you know he's one that started that franchise but The Tonight Show to me when Conan showed up there a few months ago and when Dave showed up there uh this week it felt very big for what exactly what you're talking about yeah it's interesting you remind me that he is 77 not however old I thought he was before you said that number but that gets me back to the if this is not out of your system can Netflix write a check and like you said do do a week of do a month of Tuesdays yeah I mean um I mean I I've wanted to name I've had it in my head the reunion show what that might look like it's called you know Friends of the show is in my opinion is is kind of the the the the whether it's the title of the show or just it's the theme of the show though Friends of the show you you you have all of these Stars uh in current day that got their start on Late Show with David Letterman and so you can you can mine pop culture today at its at its you know people Taylor Swift the weekend uh different different people that are kind of at their Zenith right now um who who who had appearances on that show loving appearances on that show you know um never mind the fact that you've got like the Steve Martins of the world Friends of the show who are you know up in the Tom Hanks are people who are are are elevated so high the idea of a reunion show with some of these people would be fantastic and I mean you know you know Paul and the band would be there so the musicality I just don't know what the I look at mlan show and it is very stripped down in so many ways if Netflix were to write that big check I don't imagine they would want to strip down I think they would want the uh the Big Show Business show and I don't know how interested Dave would be in that part of it I don't know how interested I would be in that I I think that's the C this might be my own bias um if if the return of David Letterman is you know the big budget show and Steve Martin and Tom Hanks come by and kiss the ring and Dave you're so famous and we're doing a celebrity gush Fest yeah we don't need that we we did that already he said goodbye already and you're just competing with you know your younger self now if you want to take the inspiration from meany and I think he had fun on meany and I think he had fun on The Tonight Show and you want to come out and let's just go full circle and and do this very lowbudget thing I you know maybe I'm just on my own holck fantasy here you know call Chris Elliot and be like Chris one more guy under the seats you know if you did four of those I mean our heads would explode but maybe it's just us old guys talking I don't know you do it in a television Studio you don't like he could fill up Radio City Music Hall he could you know like make it like one of the anniversary shows from back in the day but um and I think that that would be very tempting to do something like that because he could fill it and and and fill it he could be Billy Joel where once a month he could fill up that place without a problem and and and do that and I think that there' be a huge Temptation for that but like you say I doubt that there would be a lot of interest there but put him in some sort of Television studio somewhere that would be a very very interesting um yeah it'd be a very interesting show and I mean every time he does one of these things it just wets the appetite the audience went wild I don't think the audience went wild uh because the Applause lights were on you know again he he brings a tremendous energy with him so many of the people I've talked to both on the Letterman podcast and then in in behind the scenes have talked about anytime Dave comes around he has this unbelievable Charisma he still got it and uh it would be a lot of fun to see him doing something um a little more regular along that vein rather than the the long form thoughtful conversations he has on my next guest which are also great but they're just different than what what we grew up with uh the audience was definitely that was a true reaction uh you know having been uh producer of sorts for three decades I know what real crowd sounds like versus fake crowd I pulled the clips for the podcast and I had to put Fades on the on the cheers they were just too long for an audio podcast to just have a crowd go nuts for 30 seconds y uh so that was legit that's not the Applause sign or or train seals going oh we're supposed to clap now that was genuine enthusiasm it's a good week you know I feel like there's a lot of energy this week there certainly is in my household uh because of SNL 50 and I know I know it's been you know people talking about like crazy but I mean I've watched I've watched three out of the five documentaries um that have been produced and I've loved every single one of them um I I'm so I'm so excited for the show up here in Canada we don't have peacock so I don't know that I'm going to be able to see the uh the musical performance on Friday night which I'm very sad about um you know because to me music is is is entrenched with both of these franchises with Dave's and with SNL you know Paul his history with SNL as well um you look at the guests of some of the late night shows this week um you know uh Tina and Amy are on Seth and and and and some of these people who are associated with that show including Paul and I always think that late night with David Letterman and SNL were cousins to each other for a variety of reasons I feel like uh some of that energy is is is is spilling over into all of this this week it's a good week it's a good week for for for for comedy as long as you know you don't allow yourself to be you know um annoyed by how much people are talking about it yeah I'm so jazzed about the Dave appearance I forgot who has SNL 50 there for a second yeah you know I've been joking on my podcast this has been a story every day for a year and I'm like hey I don't know if you know this but SNL's turning 50 I I've been sick about talking about it for two months already uh kind of have to this week I'm sure the show's going to be fantastic there's no way Lord Michaels is handing in a dud it's not like the 50th Anniversary snuck up on us it's not like you can't call in all the favors from the people that you know you could wake up out of bed at 3: in the morning and they're going to crush like it's going to be great yes SNL 40 I'm still talking about like SNL 40 was one of those things where after the show happened I was like I can't believe they just produced this show and I talked about I still to this day talk about SNL 40 I thought that was just such a massive massive achievement and the idea that 10 years later they're going back to the well and saying no we're going to do it again and it's going to be even bigger and some of the things that they're doing you know um talking to some of these people are involved with it the Overflow rout all the people that the Alum that are invited they're not allowed to bring plus ones um you know they're trying to bring everybody back into this thing I uh I was in Seattle a week and a half ago or two weeks ago now I guess at the time of this recording um and and and uh I got to spend some time with George Meyer and and and asking some of these the questions about that he's going out for it like and and um some of the people who it feels very thoughtful and SNL 40 felt very thoughtful and this one here it feels like Lauren is taking that I don't know if it's a Canadian sensibility or what it is that he's putting into it there's a lot of thoughtfulness uh this this this special is being made with love the documentaries around it clearly were made with reverence and love and uh it's it's it's it's really neat to think about how these last five decades have been shaped from those two floors at in that building um you know 30 Rockefeller Center um and and and how much of the people that are going to be highlighted on these shows have ties uh you know to Letterman and to Comedy in general to the entire pop culture uh and how we view comedy it's a big deal it's huge and it it's probably the peak of the mountain like I I speculate you'll see some major cast departures this is a good time to get out after this year um aside from the celebration it's not been a great year for SNL but uh people have been saying that for all 50 Seasons I guess or maybe uh maybe everything after season people been saying that you know so that that's a bit of a hack line to say but you know Lauren is 80 how long is Lauren sticking around I I personally and you know I'm just some guy in a basement I you know hey Lauren pretty good time to get out you're 80 years old and you did the 50th Anniversary take the Victory lap and get out but apparently he wants to stay uh do you want to be the person who replaces Lauren Michaels I I don't think you do you want to be the person who replaces the person who you want to be the person who comes after the person that replaces Lauren and I'll remind everybody Lauren left once before the dick abisol and who replaced dick everol Lauren Michaels so we still don't know what it's like can somebody else run this show you know you've heard Tina Fay would be a great choice Seth Meers doesn't seem to be interested uh you know does Lauren stick around and kind of co-executive produce and start to take his foot off the gas I think that sort of transition makes sense but you know what is SNL season 1 if you lose a boow and yang and a Chay and Jo and you know same thing we've been saying this you know what is SNL without John balushi okay you know same same topic forever the show survives but you know it's a really interesting time for the program yeah it really is um I it's funny you talk about Lauren's departure um and then when he came back and one of these documentaries that I just am gushing over was about the weird they call it the weird year and it was the year that that Michaels came back and and it was the one that ended with the fire where they they protected John Lovitz and then it was the who will survive and and and that was just as I was coming into like I was 9 years old and I was aware I remember seen that show did not understand it wasn't sure this documentary talks all about that one of the things in that documentary that was very interesting was Franken and Davis um Al Franken and Tom Davis were were were basically in charge of the show Lauren was kind of overseeing and there was a call Midway or late in the season from NBC saying okay you know what Lauren you're in charge it can't be run uh by a committee you're in charge and and it's the same thing I mean it would have to be so thoughtful how he would have to pass the Baton if he did bring somebody on for a couple of years where where it was where it was him grooming somebody um you know again that's very very interesting but also like what happens with what happens with Fallon at that point you know Lauren Lauren was able to protect Conan for all those years to to to uh nurture all of this Talent Lauren is not with Conan when Conan Takes Over The Tonight Show and guess what it implodes um Lauren is very protective of this this kind of Empire that he's built it's going to be very interesting to see what happens when he when he leaves uh to that franchise as well well you you really nail it there with the power dynamics within entertainment companies been there done that live that y uh sometimes you were as a producer in a position of power and I've been fortunate at times to had such power where you can go to a boss and go we are not doing that and you don't get fired and you don't get thrown out of the office you just you you kind of I used to call it hit points yeah like and you know you use up your hit points on this particular argument now Lauren has 50 years of hit points built up but if he steps aside and there's a new showrunner and NBC's like Hey we're cutting the budget or do we really need a musical act that's so expensive or what if the show was an hour you know that kind of conversation starts happening and if you're not Lauren Michaels can you walk into whoever's running NBC's parent company of the moment and be like we are not doing that you know this is how the show goes and and we are not changing anything and I'm not sure the next producer has that power yeah I think that is a very yeah absolutely it's it's almost like um when when Johnny left um and NBC got the tonight's show back um we're in Uncharted Territory here because really at the end of the day there was only as you alluded to one era where NBC really had Saturday night and that was during either any of the fragile years or the eversol years and and I mean the rest of the time you know Lauren has this walled kind of Kingdom around it certainly for four decades um you know the first decade all right you're finding your feet but for the last three or the last four after that I should say um yeah that's it's going to be very very interesting to see what happens with that that being said uh wouldn't it be cool if there was I go the other way I go that optimistic way wouldn't it be cool if there was one last re invention of some sort before he did you know it's it's it's he's done it so many times they've done it so many times where you know I remember when uh you know the trans for for me one of the the the coolest moves was the the update transition from when it was Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fay to then Tina Fay and Amy Poler to then Amy Poler and Seth Meers and then Seth like I love that era of update a lot because of just how seamless it was and and Jo have done their they've created their own identity with it I think it's fantastic but Lauren has been able to seamlessly transition many many many things over the years it would be very interesting to see if he could transition uh after 50 what what comes next and and and again budgets and network TV like again how expensive is this show for what it's bringing in and yeah there's a lot of very interesting questions here so the other night at Rochester University Chay on stage said no this time I'm really leaving SNL now he has said that several years in a row but let's assume let's assume he's serious this time yeah so taking your lead if you told me Weekend Update next year was Joost and Sarah Sherman yeah oh God they have chemistry and that would boost her profile so there's an example of okay we've got a strong bench player here let's bring her up somebody from the cast of the 27 season yeah you know that's not crazy talk no uh I'm glad you brought up Sarah Sherman she just has a little she has wormed her way into my heart I she's my favorite performer on that show by far right now I adore her she's just so she's the right kind of weird man I just I really really like her a lot yeah it's you know the show I don't think there's anything wrong with a formula right topical open um two musical acts the news couple fake commercial and then find four other sketches and now it's 1:00 just just run the formula don't overthink it yeah uh could not agree more um what else is going on in the world of Comedy that we should talk about here uh on this week you teased it at the beginning before I hijacked your show as I usually do uh John Oliver came by he didn't come by The Daily Show I think he was on a screen behind John on his own set but uh a great appearance by John Oliver lecturing Americans that hey guess what you you became a monarchy and uh he made some very pointed commentary that was very hilarious yeah um the Alchemy I mean you go back to you go back to Strike Force 5 this is the other thing I was going to say about Dave too Dave's appeared on four out of five of the Strike Force 5 uh shows now the only one that he hasn't is John Oliver who famously uh you know has only had you know maybe one or two guests on his show he has had very few guests on his show but uh but yeah I love when the Strikeforce 5 do that I love when they will go on to each show and seeing John and and and and uh and John go back and forth um certainly was a lot of fun you know John's probably the sixth member of that Strike Force 5 uh but he he did appear on the podcast as well again for those who haven't listened to it I highly recommend I mean you know what Johnny Mack and I do here is great yeah it's fantastic watch our shows listen to our shows but once you're done listening to our show go back and listen to the Strikeforce 5 podcast it was incredible and uh seeing these PE these guys interact with each other is just delightful it it's cool that there doesn't seem to be a rivalry it's very professional you know you become a grownup and you realize like you know for the Letterman podcast to win daily comedy News podcast must lose you must have more listeners than me it's just it doesn't work that way like I'm sure we're cross-pollinating each other's shows and you know somebody is discovering either one of us going oh that that show seems cool let me check that out uh you know we all live in the world we we all know that there's 3 11:30 shows and you pick your favorite one some people switch back and forth or maybe five and you don't watch any of them and you just watch the clips but you know it's not this uh you know Dave verse Leno thing that it was 20 years ago no it isn't but but you know what I think that because of that this feeling that you're describing exists I don't think this feeling would have necessarily existed if that rivalry and and and and then the renewal of that uh with Conan in 2010 didn't exist um then feeling when they all get together and have fun and this this this thing that you're describing I don't think that would exist without without that I think they need each other um and and and uh boy it' be be very interesting to see you know guys like Leno um you know put a bow on something like that with with with some of these guys I don't know if it'll ever happen but like wouldn't it be crazy if Jay Leno showed up on the Oscars somehow wouldn't that to me that would be like I I don't think anybody would do it but if they did to me that's a that's still a massive moment even after all these years that that would be such a killer I could see them doing it I the joke is just right there um and it seems like you know if enough time has come by and Conan can find the funny in it and never met the man but I just his public Persona I think Conan could find the funny in it yeah I think Jay could find the fun I mean if they did that it would be am amazing I I don't even think Jay would be finding the funny I I I believe like you go back to the Super Bowl commercial and that to me the Super Bowl commercial for back in the day for what we're talking about here after uh uh Conan and uh and and Dave and Jay and and and all of everybody in 2010 had their had their dust up uh CBS had the Super Bowl that year and that year late show had a 15sec spot I believe it was and Oprah and Jay Leno showed up and it was it was done in secrecy and it was just it was it was the perfect moment but at the same time you know Kimmel you got Kimmel giving Dave uh you know almost giving him a little body shot saying hey you you let jeno Jay Leno up you gave you threw him a life preserver you know to me Jay will always say yes I'm gonna be a part of this because it shows that we're all you know there's camaraderie there for Dave to do that it was because the joke trumped everything it was like yeah this may not be the popular thing to do or whatever but we're going to do it because it's going to be hilarious and it's going to be F it's it's going to be so inspir iring that the sitting president of the United States is going to be watching at the White House watching this game going hey how did they how did they do that you know and that would this would be one of those moments where I think Leno would be in in a second um yeah to me it would just be these are one of these These are these uh uh U fantasy you know it's like it's like my friends who love comic books you know we would always go and oh what if so and so fought so and so you know this nerd these nerd things whatever I have that big time when it comes to the late night talk show guys um and gals for that matter but uh that would be a spectacular moment I don't know that they would actually do it but imagine you know jayleno walking out ladies and gentlemen c'b and jayleno walks out yeah amazing immediate standing o right yeah oh yeah it'd be it'd be fantastic it'd be yeah so anyway I'm very excited for the Oscars though uh and I don't normally get excited for these things but but but with Conan being on there uh take my money I'm in yeah uh I as a daily podcaster I hate these Sunday night events you don't youever know hosting the Grammys it just means I have to record it 9:30 10 o'clock at night um you know when I think everything's safe but uh there was the one year with there was an incident with Chris Rock I don't know if you heard about that one um where was like oh I guess I have to record even later tonight uh that was kind of a big top boy boy did that do the numbers for the podcast I mean oh yeah you I'm joking about you know oh it's so hard I have to walk from the couch which is 8 feet from here to to recording into my MacBook it's not exactly construction work in the snow but um you know that that was an example of okay this going to be a big topic why don't you work a little harder for the next couple days and it paid off for the Pod oh absolutely and and and I don't know that uh you know there's famous and there's Infamous uh Conan being on there I think has the ability to to create shine in a whole bunch of different ways I'm I'm very very curious as to as to what uh as to how far they'll go you mentioned Trevor Noah the other day I I it's funny watching the Grammys and and music is a huge thing in my life always has been so I I try and catch the major music award shows for the performances mostly um but I thought Trevor Noah I don't think of Trevor Noah as a host in in the sense of of like an MC um I don't think of him that way and sometimes I think these folks that they hire to to to run these shows that's exactly what they're looking for they're basically just looking for an MC they're not looking for somebody I don't think of Trevor that way I think of Trevor more as as as a comedian and and and and yeah even a thought provoker that sort of thing I thought at the Grammys I thought he kind of presented it just like a Master of Ceremonies like he's just very straight ahead um I was a little bit I don't like I don't like going down a negative path I was a little bit underwhelmed with with with how he did compared to his name on the Marquee as to what I was expecting couple couple thoughts there um I I think being the MC and just and the host is a skill I I always stick up for Ryan CEST people give Ryan Crest a hard time yes what Ryan Crest did in the Heyday of American Idol was underappreciated and if you need a proof of it when Simon cow started the American xfactor they had somebody who wasn't Ryan Crest in the role and then you noticed oh that's what Ryan Crest does he's the glue he's the traffic cop he's the quarterback he keeps the trains on time yep I I think for the Grammys we're tuning in the Grammys we want to see Beyonce we want to see t Swift so you're not really there for the host so I think for Trevor to just keep the trains on time is the move specific to this year he he was announced as the host rather late I think it was only two or three weeks before and just because I have the podcast I know that he was touring I believe he was in India like he he was not touring the states he was definitely overseas MH so I think it may have been a situation similar to Joe Koy who caught a lot of crap for putting together an award show in nine days yeah Trevor Noah again Pro could wake him out of bed at 3 in the morning go hey I need you to host uh the SS right now oh okay who's here you know wear the Q cards tell me what to do I'm sure he could do it yep um but it may be a situation where he didn't get to connect with the writers and work the material for weeks whereas Nikki Glazer who got great reviews for her Golden Globes appearance said she's been work she worked on it for months and she was out in the clubs working the materials so it might just a situation where for whatever reason they signed Trevor kind of late he did get a producer credit this year so there may you know it's not one of those things where they woke up and went oh see if Trevor will do it oh we'll give him a producer credit that's not a three-hour negotiation that's weeks yeah so it might have just dragged a little bit and he was less prepared is a loaded word but you know what I mean like he yeah he he he didn't work on it for four months whereas maybe in the past he would have would be my guess yeah and and you bring up good point too because it is the Grammys versus the Emmys like I look at the the the levies and what they did on the on on the on the Emmys you know um they they they were the prepared comedy material was incredible but you're also in a medium where you know that is a huge part of that entire medium is comedy in fact some would say it's it's it's you know more than half of that Medium would be would be comedy presentation that is very similar to the award show that we're seeing here and that's being televised for the Grammys you're coming to see Taylor and you're coming to see Beyonce and you're coming to see Kendrick and and and and and and these other people so that might be part of it as well there's one Comedy Award and it wasn't even announced on stage it was announced you know as as they were filing in the comedy album award was already uh you know the the cat was out of the bag so that might be part of it as well but yeah I I was I just thought it was I thought it was interesting I thought okay well yeah he did a straight ahead uh take of it and then I listened to your you guys had the exact same exact same kind of uh uh reaction to it should we talk about Amy Schumer I don't I don't know if she wants us to talk about her or not sure so yes as I've been joking on my pod uh Amy Schumer wants us to talk about her so I'll start with the Oscars I I did a story I think it's on um Wednesday's podcast where yeah I I was reading a story and I saw the word Amy and my brain translated it to Amy polar because the topic was award shows and Conan hosting the Oscars and then I was like oh wait no this is Amy Schumer talking and then I remembered Amy Schumer hosted the Oscars which if you said to me now in 2025 just seems crazy talk Amy Schumer hosted the Oscars really because in your mind Chris Rock hosted that Infamous night um and I don't know Amy's movie didn't get reviewed that well I I thought as I I was I'm pulling my P I'm not pulling my I I don't want to come across as you hate Amy Schumer I told the story on the podcast I tried to hire Amy Schumer and the bosses wouldn't give me the the the money for it back I love that story that story compelled the they wouldn't give you the money for it how much money are we talking here you know oh I me up and cominging comic you know it's got to be what 5 10,000 a shot like what are we talking here yeah no we we we would get comedians you've heard of um you know you pay them something they were upand comers and we' we try and give people $200 for a one hour show not a lot of money it's not no money especially if you're doing you know the five minute spots and hustling up and down a regular gig uh the promotion was good uh you know this was Amy in ascendency and I couldn't get the money cleared for it so I I don't want to make it sound like I'm anti Amy but I did feel like her promotion for this recent movie it just felt uh it was just a little much for me like I I don't need to know what uh you were doing with a baseball player and I'll leave it there and keep it clean I just I I just don't need to know that yeah um I've got to I've got a the reason I BR I bring it up every time I would every time I'd hear you talk about it because it would be a a daily thing the daily comedy podcast Amy Schumer wants us to talk about her and and there would be something new that you were talking about it wasn't it was she really really uh got out there in the promotion of this of this movie um my last time that I saw Letterman um in in in uh 2015 April 20th 2015 um Amy Schumer was the second guest and we were in New York that week for um you know for an extended period of time before the show and we went to the comedy seller and on uh it comedy that night the Saturday night beforehand Amy bumped one of the local uh Amy bumped somebody Lou CK and Zen Zari and Amy Schumer all did um unadvertised appearances good night that was crazy like it was like we had even heard of the comedians who were on who were slated and suddenly you know three of them get bumped and those are the three that show up Louie it turns out was prepping his monologue for SNL uh which would happen if I think he did the season finale that year well well Amy came on there and it it's funny she did this bit it was you know three or four three or four uh uh bits talking about uh what would become train wreck she had just talked about the movie that she had just done and and and was getting some material off that and then lo and behold Monday night she's the guest and if it's not the exact same material that she did except remixed where it was just Dave throwing up questions which were just you know uh setups essentially right and and again that that's one of the things to bring it back to Dave that I just am in awe of is how he can look at a piece or hear you know he's not even hearing it this piece of Comedy material that's being performed on a Saturday night where he's not there and and and you know this comedian comes in and and does panel and you think he's talking to her about the new movie that she the new Jud appat movie that she just wrapped you know and that's not what they're doing all he's doing is setting up softballs so she can go into her comedy routine right and and it's one of those things and I'm watching Jimmy the other night and and and it's just I know it's so Breakneck and there's they've got so much to do and I again I'm try not to be mean or whatever but it is a lost art being able to do that with a comedian sitting beside you and uh I got to see it live with Amy Schumer and she's on topic so I just thought I would bring up that story but but it's also the greater story of these hosts these days um man that's a lost art I think in in in many respects yeah there you know there's skills to it that there's reps uh in any Pursuit the more times you do something you just get better at it um they're Pros there's a reason they're the guys in the chairs right yeah absolutely um I just I love doing this with you I would do this with you all the time once a month what's it whenever anything happens I just I love doing this with you so much what's uh what's new and exciting with the daily comedy podcast I mean it's it's got to be I know you're you're expanding shows in your um in your podcast Network congratulations on that that's fantastic to see all of these uh you know these shows that you have under your umbrella um I can imagine it's a grind um every a daily comedy podcast like I mean oh my God or comedy news um you know podcast uh what's new with the show and what's the same with the show and do you you still seem to have that Vigor for it that you've had you've got so many years in comedy um you still enjoying it yeah no I love it it's my favorite part of my day to put it together I I don't record it seven days a week I tend to record four days I'm pretty open with the audience about that for example this right now y you know will be used uh I changed the open music uh in January to something a little more upbeat uh and quote unquote professional rather than the homemade thing uh that I had made for the first few years this is proper music library stuff it's got a little more of a late night feel and just gives me a little more energy off the top uh I I don't overthink the show I I do I I do the show for the casuals I've explained this you know could I deep dive on comedians nobody's heard of sure uh but in all formats play the hits so I'll lead with John Oliver went on The Daily Show I don't have to explain who you know Letterman went on Fallon I don't have to explain that uh then I take the break and in the second half I tend to do the more dier things um as guests get offered to me I do them it's not a guest driven show I I don't spend days going oh let me figure out what comedian to talk to I had Larry on recently because I was particularly interested Larry the Cable Guy friend of mine uh is touring local Nebraska not even clubs he's doing like high schools and I just thought was that was interesting so I reached out to his person I'm like hey can Larry give me some time and uh we had a nice conversation you know you're a regular guest um oh uh I do have something new so this is my new exper um I started a YouTube live stream I just created a loop of a 20 47 stream of like the episodes from the last two weeks and then some of the guests I had some of our conversations up there I will add this to the loop and it's just running on YouTube now I do an audio only podcast yeah which is great I had a shower and shave for your stupid show today you know we taped pretty early it's like I'm you know I'm still drinking my coffee we're grateful oh my audience that is a real thing that I do that's uh I buy me a coffee bit but cofk coffee during the show thank you caramel caramel and milk byme coffee.com DAC comedy news uh so I created the 247 Loop now I I do have a YouTube channel where I post the shows and I turn the comments off because I just got tired of hearing people say there's no video I never said there was video I even labeled the feed daily comedy news audio podcast um but for some reason the loop doesn't bother people that there's no video they're they're happy staring at my neon sign that says daily comedy news so that that's new and that seems to be bringing new people to the show so welcome new people to the show but it's an audio podcast if you want to see what I look like have Mike booked me that's right that's exactly it and and again I I uh I'm not a shill uh like I am a I'm a genuine Bonafide fan and and and knowing the thing I love about your show is how quick it is um you know exact opposite of this show you know um um we many times hey Mike have you have you considered an editor um but I love long form conversation and that's that's the decision that we made with this and and I and I stick by it because at the end of the day as the host you got to be interested in what in in in the in in the topic and and and and the format of the topic um I don't want to do a straightup interview I want to have a conversation that goes back and forth and who knows how long it goes two hours great let's do it yeah what are we doing today 10 minutes I asked you for yeah exactly exactly um but the thing about your show is it is so consistent in if I I get entertained by it but it's also I get informed by it and it's quick I can literally do it between clients if I'm down at my office and it's a client has left early and a new client is going to come in 15 minutes I'm like oh perfect I can I can slide in a daily comedy uh podcast or news podcast and and and and it's it's it's great and it's upbeat you are extremely entertaining but dry you got to you got to look for the joke sometimes because they fly by Otherwise and and I love that you do that and uh it's one of the things I'm trying to learn as as as becoming a host is my voice clearly you have that and and and the the the the host sliner or newscaster or whatever you want to call it um and then also the the producer part of it programming putting the right content in there knowing the right headlines to put in there you've got it all dialed in it's fantastic I could not endorse it enough uh the best place for people to find you is uh type daily comedy news podcast into your app of choice and hit follow that that's a good thing to do it comes out 7 days a week at 3:05 a.m.
there is the YouTube version of it there is the 247 stream of it uh but you know I'm here to do an audio podcast so followers there the most valuable place if you're app neutral is on Apple podcast uh because a the way the algorithm works if I got a flurry of Letterman podcast fans who went oh okay and I got a bunch of new followers one day then I would climb the charts which helps visibility and then other people see it and it's a whole feedback loop but you know Apple podcast La comedy News podcast but you're too kind oh it's hey man it's I I I I can't be dishonest when it comes to this stuff my enthusiasm is either the switch is on or it's off and and and uh I am so enthused about what it is that you do and I'm grateful for it and again it's it's it it it entertains but it also informs and I want to stay up on this stuff in a world that it's really really it's getting tougher and tougher to stay up on your favorite topics because things are getting so expansive your show does a great job of that like I say I go to you guys and I go to late nigh.
comom or as as kind of my my Staples by the way late nigh.
comom I know you've been uh you've been getting some of your sources from that isn't AR aren't we so happy that late nighter docomomo good I go out of my way to not over Source them there's an honor amongst podcasters thing I don't want my whole podcast to be and late nighter said this and late nighter said that I'd like to do some of my own work here uh you know the other thing I'd like to say about my pod is as I've been trying to explain it to people so I I recently was on a cruise to Antarctica which was amazing so met you know so met some people like hey what do you do for a living and I really started to explain the podcast is more about a Vibe so you know sure you gotta kind of sort of care what Shane Gillis and Jim Gaffigan are up to but it even if you don't hopefully it's just a Vibe of I'm good company in the morning and just roll through a couple stories and there's you know gossip Corner you've heard of who Pete Davidson is and that's why I'm trying to hit the the hits so maybe you're not a quote unquote comedy nerd but like you've heard of David Letterman on Jimmy Fallon so you could understand why these clips I'm about to play are interesting to you and that's why I do the more nerdier stuff in the second half of the show so hopefully people pick up on it's just it's just a Vibe it's a casual listen as you're driving to work or whatever I personally listen U to QC the show to make sure I didn't blow an edit I listen on my way to the National Donuts chain U it just seems the round trip there is about the length of the show so I listen to myself every morning I'm not a screamer the volume doesn't go all over the place like you said I'm dry I'm trying to slip in a couple hopefully witty things but I'm not trying to out fund any of the comedians by no means of course not no it's uh you're you're phenomenal at it and I hope that uh I hope that you do mind some of the the the relationships that you've built over the years and have these um very informed conversation with some of these personalities that are uh that that that that you've gotten to know as you've studied their craft become an expert on their craft I just I'm really grateful for you Johnny and and I'm grateful for this uh kinship that we have and I I can't wait for the next time like again um you know you've you've said in the past many times that that that you would be our Tony Randall you are far from that even though what a what a what an esteemed place to be you are far from that I love you thank you so much for coming on the Letterman podcast again man appreciate you having me oh right on uh this is why we do the show we like to talk about all of the little nooks and crannies when it comes to uh the world of of of of Comedy but of course um you know zeroed in on the world of David Letterman and what uh he and his production has brought to the world it has been a lot uh this has been another episode of the Letterman podcast with Mike Chisum coincidentally I am Mike Chisum thank you and good night overcoat and Underpants
