Oh The Gifts Hollywood Gave Us! Jackets, and Cue-Cards And Microphones Oh My! Featuring Candace Chisholm and Gabe Abelson

June 7, 2024 01:09:30

Episode 129 of The Letterman Podcast is the continuation of our journey down to Hollywood, California. This is Hollywood Day Two, a day full of fellowship with Letterman alumni, a reunion with J Ryan and his wife, Nicole, and Mike being the special guest for the taping of the season premiere of Frasier.

Our episode starts off with Mike visiting former monologue writer for Late Show with David Letterman, Gabe Abelson. Gabe takes Mike on a tour of many of the artifacts he kept from Late Show, including awards, props, and mementos from the show, and a giant pile of cue cards that were used in dozens of Late Show monologues. He and Mike discuss and deconstruct the process of building the monologue for David Letterman. Gabe also gives Mike a very cool souvenir.

After that, Mike visits J and Nicole Ryan, and they have a heartfelt reunion, receiving more incredible gifts to The Letterman Podcast from one of our favorite friends.

Finally, Mike makes his way to the Paramount Lot, where in Stage 18, executive producer and former Letterman writer Chris Harris allowed Mike to show up as his very special guest for the season two premiere of Frasier.

As with our first recap, the lovely Candace Chisholm joins Mike to recount these and many more stories of Day Two of The Letterman Podcast trip to Hollywood.

hey this is Gabe ablon and you're watching the Letterman podcast welcome once again to the Letterman podcast my name is Mike Chisum all right so we are going to continue with our recap of uh the Letterman podcast's pilgrimage down to uh Hollywood California La La Land in May of 2024 to go see David Letterman uh perform a couple of times it turns out and also visit with a whole bunch of folks that we've become friends with over over our time here over the last couple of years uh day two was when things were supposed to get going but as we showed in the first episode day one was action-packed and you can go back and take a look at that uh I continue my conversation with the lovely Candace jism who is pretending to be modly interested in what uh our adventures were down there no I'm just kidding about that she uh uh she gets a real kit coming here and and and and asking me and hearing about the stories kind of firsthand in front of the camera she enjoys that and uh it's fun to tell with her and of course she's much better looking than I am so for those who are watching the video uh version of this show you're welcome um day two day two was when I thought things were supposed to begin uh um and and and they kept going the momentum of day one just rolled right into day two uh the first uh group of um content or videos that we're going to be showing on here and there's a lot of videos that I cut into this thing um from the apartment of Gabe ablon Gabe ablon was of course uh one of the very few monologue writers for David Letterman and uh in in in um the late '90s when Bill shef kind of stepped aside Gabe came in and was the head monologue writer for a few years uh five four or five years I believe it was and um he and I become friends we actually met on uh Jay Ryan's podcast or on his internet show uh cars and& comedy late night playset um we met there that's where Gabe and I originally met and then he came of course on to our show one of uh one of our most popular episodes actually uh was Gabe ablees and I've had a lot of people reach out to me um asking questions about the monologue and things like that a lot of that information we got from Gabe and just a great great guy he and I become friends through this process and and it was really cool to to go down there and hang out with him for a while and I've got a lot of shots inter that I'm going to intercut into this episode uh from gab's apartment so Gabe um he he has a ton of Q cards from the monologue and he gave us one we talk about that with candy and I show it here um we'll show pictures of it as well and and and um also um you know he had a bunch of momentos he had a prop joke there's a prop joke in there that uh he didn't write and we're gonna try and find out uh who wrote it to see if if we can we can track down the person I'm going to go to Steve Young first I think he might have uh been the culprit behind this prop joke that that that uh that he has but also we go through some of the newspaper articles that that he was featured in or his jokes uh were featured in um and some of the other momentos that he had his Emmy wall is unbelievable it's really cool that Gabe Gabe's a very thoughtful guy um not only a talented extremely talented writer uh performer also a performing teacher he loves teaching people how stand up and the Art of the nuances the little things you know carving the edges off the sculpture that is already there Gabe loves to to to to to drill down and dial into that and I just I love Gabe he's such a great guy he's a brother from another mother um so so going into some of the stuff with him and seeing the things that he has collected and and over the years really really thoughtful and um and so yeah I'm going to interlace a lot of video of Gabe and and and gab's place into this after gabes I went to visit Jay Ryan which is where I met G originally um Jay was on a few weeks ago and uh I haven't seen him in two years in the flesh and it was fantastic to see him and hang out with him hung out with him and Nicole for two or three hours just hung out sat on the floor and and and Nicole we talked about about her before if you if you don't know um you know Jay's wife Nicole who is just I I adore her and uh she's had her life way late unfortunately by Ms and it was just really nice to connect with them where they are right now and I mean it's there's there's parts of it that suck of course uh with where Nicole's at and but it was just it was really nice to spend some time with them and I did and he bestowed gifts upon gifts and I go through them with Candace and and she sees them for the first time hey Mike where'd you get the uh RX the dx77 um you know the RCA dx77 right the type 77 DX type 77 DX where'd you get that from Jay and there's a couple other things that we haven't really revealed they will be revealed on this episode pretty cool gifts that Jay gave uh us uh myself but the Letterman podcast and and uh I just appreciate his support to no end after that left their house and went directly to the Paramount lot because we wanted to see our boy Chris Harris Chris Harris of course um former writer for Letterman but now the EP on the continuation of Frasier and boy was it cool to be there and he let me come in I I was given the I was given the the VIP guest treatment I I I got to see a few of the scenes filmed uh for the premiere of season two Kelsey gramar came out and gave this amazing speech and and had people in tears he was in tears uh talking about how grateful he is um the legendary Jim Burrows directed and and so candy and I talk about that but but and I I shove a lot of pictures that I'm going to interlace into this because Chris pulled me out of the audience and let me hang out in his back pocket with him and uh on the floor watching Frasier um and and and the filming of frasure unfold and it was fascinating it was really cool and and I couldn't I said this to Candy I said it you know I talked to but I it's worth seeing again I'm so proud of Chris I'm so proud of Chris for for for for where he's at and what he's doing he was in his element He was beaming um and and every person I talked to and I talked to quite a few of them um as things were happening we're just so pleased to be working on that production and and and specifically working for Chris and it was just excellent it was an excellent time and uh but day2 was action-packed and that's what uh this episode of the please enjoy this episode of the letter podcast oh letter podcast is one sponsor one sponsor only hellodd deli.com go to hellodd deli.com for all of your Late Show with David Letterman needs shirts hats mugs all that crap hellodd deli.com uh prepared personally by the legendary rert G um without further Ado please enjoy uh the retelling of day two of our pilgrimage to Hollywood uh day two wait where's day okay so yeah okay so the next day um well you know what if there was present day I would think that day two of the trip so this is the Tuesday this is the day I didn't see Dave and there's a reason why I didn't see Dave I was uh I was preoccupied even if I would have got a comp ticket I wouldn't have been able to go see him anyway because I had already um been invited somewhere else and and it was a really cool place where I was invited but that was in the evening so day two began um with me going to see uh Letterman monologue writer Gabe Abelson and there's going to be a lot of Gabe clips put into this section to day two so if we do break this up into days um you know there's going to be a lot of Gabe in this episode here because he took me through a tour of of of his apartment and some of the things that he has kept and it's astounding some of the things that Gabe has has has has kept he showed me the 911 so he was the monologue writer for Dave so bill sheft was Dave's monologue writer he left for a while and Gabe came in and replaced him and then a few years later uh Bill shef ended up coming back and Gabe moved on and did and and and and moved into other places in his in his career including of course uh you know he's one of his best friends in the world is Tom Green and and and Gabe was a big part of Tom Green's career um and and other things as well but uh um you know Gabe is still a standup he's a mentalist wow um oh and boy oh boy uh I I don't have it down here with me I've got it in my jacket pocket um he did some uh mentalism stuff with me right then and there just the two of us that's why and blew me away yeah absolutely blew me away hey can you tell can you say what he did I can um I can yeah absolutely so so so he got me to how long's he been doing that for for a long time for a long long time and he's a standup and he's he's got a he's got a really cool Niche because he's hilarious standup he's also somebody one of the things I appreciate about Gabe so much is he loves pouring into people so he does like uh comedy uh comedy writing for late night classes oh at like Flappers and and and online and different places uh find Gabe ablon for anybody who is interested in comedy find Gabe abson find his Facebook even just watching his Facebook he still writes in Dave's voice he'll put out these these jokes on Facebook that are clearly David Letterman monologue jokes um and and and so he's just a he's just a really awesome guy that loves building into people and I appreciate Gabe so so much so he takes me for this tour of his apartment um he was there during 9 so there's this coin that was given out to the staff at 911 from from worldwide pants and uh it's this just amazing coin he has it in a glass case um he showed it to me he showed me a few other of his there's a lot of a lot of other stuff all right so we got mugs and glasses here and this is really cool because you've got a variety of them um let's let's start on the right there's our boy Tom Green that is the new Tom Green Show yep um 2003 um after Dave uh well along with Dave the most fun gig I've ever had on that show and then that was right after Dave that was my first gig Late Late Show with Craig kilborn yep um late show glass and then if uh we go over what's the ball what's the baseball oh this this ball was given to me by Bill sheft and it's it's a fascinating story behind this now I don't have giant hands what this is is a according to bill this is a ball used in and you know Bill a big Sports Guy this is a bowl that's used in spring training because if you can see a 95 mph pitch with this when you get when the show starts you you know it'll look like a grapefruit so I always thought that was kind of cool I guess he was down in spring training and brought me a little gift or Yankees um well he Bill's a Mets fan yeah I thought he was I thought that's what he had said okay and you got a coin in here a coin oh this is this was uh U well you know how powerful and how um Dave sort of led the way on 911 uh this was given out to everyone afterward um it's just sort of a token with the you know the flag and then that chip taken out symbolic of the lives lost and uh and then World Wide pants Incorporated on the front that is flip it over one more time that is unbelievable oh yeah here's got the shows that lives Rayman Late Late Show and uh yeah the worldwide Pan shows at the time and what's the Emmy back there what's that what's that that was that was part of the uh the gift bag at the emys um yeah it's a it's literally a Christmas tree ornament that's fantastic and then that was a show I produced and wrote for Discovery last year the G Josh Gates tonight and Politically Incorrect um actually that was the first uh staff gig I had when I came to LA and kilborne was second so cool and then the the pack of cards in the bottle that is uh called the uh impossible bottle and basically um from the the guy that makes them and we'll never give up the secret said it is literally a uh sealed deck of cards and this thing is uh I guess if you take this out it's the Joker from within that deck which is still shrink WP so I don't know just just thought it was cool so cool Gabe uh um but uh but yeah he had a lot of newspaper clippings and here's one from the uh from the New York Post um let him inquip the traffic was so bad I had to squeeze through spaces that were narrower than President Clinton's definition of sex boy did we look that for what it was wor for years then came again so he had a bunch of that memorabilia though in his apartment yeah lots of it and he had a wall with he he almost that's cool that he still has all that oh yeah and I took a video uh like he showed me I took a video of of the jackets that he has um do he have any that you don't have oh he's got three or four that I don't have so this is uh a favorite of many of our fans is what we're going to do right here there everybody there is David Letterman fans many of them are obsessed with the jackets and you've still got a bunch I'm a habit daser now did they just sell hats I don't even know it's work red one actually wore that on my next guest I believe he wore he wore that one I think the one with Melinda Gates I think he was wearing that one I could be wrong but that's is that the last one you got I no no no that's not the last one uh this was a gift to when they first moved the theater and Bill shef was lovely enough to give me this uh when I started there sort of a housewarming thing um this is the one for my last year there I love this one fantastic um and then uh I can hold those uh and then this one was my first before I even oh no no no this wasn't my first oh yeah this is the and you have one of these I've got that one 99 yeah you got one of those it's one my favorite ones wi Gretzky's number and uh and the big pants I just Branford Ontario there you go there you go and this was um my first jacket I was uh I was on retainer when I got this one so this had to be really early this had to be 96 y um and then fantastic I did give one to my dad who subsequently lost it but that's okay uh it was uh uh do I have any more over here oh maybe that was it um oh yeah no that's it y but uh um and then and then a lot of the Q cards and we we've got videos of that we're going to like I'll show a bunch of gay videos right now so what do we got there so that's a um it was the fifth anniversary of the show and uh they just gave this out to everyone on the show yeah there's a CBS logo there I don't know if you can see the reflection or not but that's really cool so so I just kept uh oh when uh that was uh yeah they used to uh Mike mckinty m Mike mckinty is a National Treasure yeah a National Treasure Mike is is the best and he would occasionally well um you know well almost every day would put somebody's like baby picture young very very young picture we don't need to be looking at that these are um I used to get quoted an Entertainment Weekly a lot so these are just some some jokes from uh that Dave did that were in Entertainment Weekly awesome and then these were um some jokes on the times that were in the New York Times and This was um a really big personal moment for me when Dave came back and this this the was the joke quoted and that was the closing joke his first day back from his heart surgery um so and that's one Dave joke yeah that's mine these are all mine a TV Guide what's a joke here that they uh um armed robbers broke into the Gap over the weekend the suspects are described as being armed and casual I yeah so that's that's a perfect Dave joke it's a Dave joke I still think in Dave's voice I can't help it um and uh oh yeah this is from uh New York Times magazine that guy's on the front and in here um there's me and Gerard Mulligan um going over the jokes and a really really big article on on late night here all of late night so yeah yeah all of late night in the year 2000 so uh want to go look at some cards yes let's go look at some cards my friend okay this is amazing to me Gabe like this is amazing to me that you have these brother like seriously a lot of these are are very personal to me so like um are we shooting yeah I'm shooting oh um anyway we'll talk later about the uh what I was telling you about okay okay okay we'll talk lat okay um so I don't know what we're going to find some of them will be terrible I'm sure probably most of them um oh my God President Bush wants China to return a spy plane good luck they can't even get Clinton to return sofa he stole from the White House that's when they were stealing Furniture y uh when Tony makes a hash mark that means it is the closing joke of the monologue oh my God that's so cool so that's okay A little bit of trivia um Tony was just a genius and knowing which words to include just enough short hand so Dave would hit the joke exactly this is from a flare pen that's what he would do in rehearsal he would make as Dave would say the joke over and over again each time Tony would write the words a little different and then tape it over with white tape because there's no time to do a new Q card and they also are you know a lot of stock so we would just tape over and rewrite the joke and then it was numbered up there on the left so there was that one um uh okay so this is not a final Q card that's something along the way that's usually the way it looks when um although he did tape over it maybe he made a mistake but when it's not in red and underline everything that means it's the way that Dave checked it off on the page and then it'll get tweaked in rehearsal uh B Bush sets three and half hours aside every day to play video games that's what we're looking for in a world leader a man whose goal is to do well in Tetris I don't even remember that joke I honestly don't remember that joke but look at that like the that the double underline so that's that's Dave's Cadence yeah because one of the things with Dave's Cadence is that he wasn't it didn't even necessarily have to be a joke if you put the right emphasis on the right word or the right syllable that would be become the humorous part of the of the thech and and I think that was something that that Carson did too um not not surprisingly um uh you know when when when we were in the pandemic and lockdown I had I wrote some joke about um because I was doing everybody was doing their talk show from home so I did this St made these stupid videos because I was locked in home what would it have been like if Johnny Carson was still around doing a show so I did a monologue for like a week I I wrote a monologue every night and did it as Johnny this no I got to find are they still available it's kind of rer pinish but it's it's um yeah they're they're still on YouTube okay if they're still there we got to share we'll share those out that's really cool you know it's nice to know even all the restaurants closed uh and the delivery services the something the punchline was Lo Los angelinos angelinos are still able to get their avocado toast you know but that's what I mean about the punching the word you know avocado toast and often Carson would repeat it you know it's amazing to me how you can get into their voice the way that you do um you just got into Carson's voice it gave me shivers as you did that just in the delivery of it that's oh thanks well amazing uh he's the guy I grew up on um we got here Dave excited about New Year's Eve the Celebration Time Square should be very exciting instead of dropping a ball that just going to push the Clark off the H that's pretty direct it's a little harsh I do remember that joke see Clinton and Bush at the White House the only ones missing where granny and Ellie May um oh yeah I remember writing this joke I like this one sad news John Gotti's daughter is getting divorced it's a good deal for the husband she gets the car the boat the house and he gets to live that's that's actually an example I don't remember how he did it but I wouldn't I wouldn't be surprised at all if he hit live he gets to live he gets to live L and gentlemen this is just silly how you go girl Al you go girl so this is follow follow followed International outrage by the Colombian people over a joke from the boys on May 11th about the Miss Universe and their joke about the Miss Universe talent I love the talent competition Miss Columbia's Talent was swallowing 50 balloons of heroin Bo that was a Barry and mahand Joe great Barry and so um so I guess it was yeah it was an international outrage over that show all 50 bags of hero so the next day of course we had to address that in the monologue of I have to but I did welcome my name's Dave you folks are here on an exciting night the entire balcony is filled with hundreds of nationalities I've offended um yeah you imagine what that would do now this you know 2000 you know the guy stands outside the Elan the Elan theater po you know this guy every day gives me the finger well today took the day off and had Juan Valdez give me the finger so that must have been a big like a big Todo I don't really uh remember the outrage but apparently that's why I wrote the note on the back it um yeah it's like these are a time capsule yeah that's a Dick Cheney joke it's a very old reference he was caught on a hot mic calling someone a major league [ __ ] so of course jokes on that okay so there you go so you throw it in and that's the final joke that's the final joke and then Dave either gets away of okay so [ __ ] okay could you say [ __ ] on network TV at that time uh it it may have been bleep but it was very clear what he was saying yeah okay okay I think you could hear the A and the rest of it was bleep and and by and it was the day after so everyone had known about cheny Thing by that point Y um yeah this was a typical closer but it's hot folks hookers in Time Square bless their hearts offering their summer special for an extra 50 bucks they'll blow on you that was one that's the boys that's got to be the boys right you know I don't even know who that was originally or a faxer maybe fax seem it's just been it's that's just been there have been so many variations of that you know absolutely uh another closer I kept mostly the ones I kept were pretty much closers you know what my favorite one of those ones were um and they did it every year and I don't know when they first started it uh I gotta ask Don about that um it was the one where um uh it was Fashion Week and the West Westminster dog show at the same time and um we got [ __ ] coming and going was the punchline oh my favorite he said it every year he said it every single year last week was fashion week this week it's the Westminster dog show we got [ __ ] coming and going [ __ ] coming and going and the other one um um uh was It's Fashion Week all week at the Madison Square Garden last night all night um spikey was taunting a Labradoodle I don't remember what the dog actually I think it was a beon frie but now lab dooodle would be the go-to oh Labradoodle would be the one for sure be the one um but I always thought that was funny um Fashion Week in New York I saw nine supermodels sitting at an outdoor Cafe sharing a carrot stick you know that was oh man your M cuz you are a stand Chef too same thing standup and and and a monologue writer so you've got you've got both uh you got both tools at your disposal and how you do you have to be a standup to be a monologue writer do you think it's a great question I actually think that might have been what got me the gig in a way because um you know being older doesn't help but being older on that show uh and having done standup for so many years beforehand which is what Bill did may have been doing it longer than I have actually um is Dave wanted to know you know someone that KN knew what it was like to have their butt on the line be out out up front there every you know and then we would discuss the jokes you know how'd that go what you think of the crowd or whatever so I think and the other guys that interviewed for the job we not stand-ups there you go so yeah um well clearly even after all these years I mean how long are we talking almost 30 years after the fact yeah years you know 23 years yeah yeah yeah 23 okay so so yeah 23 years after the fact you're still right there in the delivery of it yeah you know as opposed to a writer who might you know be a little bit fuzzy on you're sharp as attack when it comes to well I mean I've been working on other shows ever since so you know the writing muscle keeps but but like I said I still tend to write in Dave's voice even when I'm writing for other people and I I think that you know that that helped me too but um Everybody follow Gabe abbl on uh on Facebook because it's it's delightful where every few days you'll see just just one of those beautiful uh the economy of words is so awesome um you know the joke will pop up and it's it's it's so great that that the whole joke's in bold because there's so few few words in it and it if you listen to it or read it in Dave's voice in your head it is 100% a David Letterman joke and it's uh it's quite quite marvelous to see that to see you do that what I like on Facebook for anybody that wants to try monologue writing is that even much more so than Twitter if you create a background color you're really limited to the amount of characters so it forces you to write a joke in a very you know very very concise joke so that's why I like it for you know was Dave exercise was Dave's jokes were his jokes shorter than Carson's or were Carson's was it very similar it was it was similar it depended on the joke uh you know in fact last night it was the first class of this semester's uh writing for late night class and one of the things I tell them you know I tell them there's a ton of rules there's no rules in standup because they're all stand-ups absolutely um but uh but every rule is breakable in terms of rules like every rule in a late night joke there the structure there is a a definite structure music to it you know a certain amount of beats per measure and there's not like that in standup standup if you're formulaic you're a hack but in late night you almost have to be formulaic there is this template that and you which is why the languaging of a lot of hosts you'll hear them apparently you know I don't know about that but so you know and so you hear a lot of the same thing so I always tell my students and this I don't think is in a book anywhere uh to try to keep it to three lines or less on the page I mean that's pretty much how Dave lik to see it sentence should be a short simple factual sentence not funny the you know just based on on on and with no extra words and so if you're near the end of line two and you're still on your setup you're in trouble that means take a different story but the other thing the the other thing is here's an example of a rule that I said I broke which had to be broken and the longer this joke is the better it is it was a joke that Dave did every year in the New York City marathon and he would say yesterday was his marathon in case you don't know uh how it works the runner St Out start out in Staten Island they cross the verizo bridge then they cross into Brooklyn they go all the way around the tip of Brooklyn then they cross the bridge go up through Queens then they cross another Bridge go into the Bronx come around the Bronx down through the Bronx cross the bridge back into Manhattan and finally finish in Central Park you know it's the same way cab drivers get in from lagard before there was Uber and left C driv so the more circuitous that joke is the better it is where is most jokes you want to keep so you know a letterman word right there by the way you talk about the vocabulary there um and then then there's the X Factor of of of Tony so you get the joke on the page and then Tony who works with Dave and worked with Dave forever and I don't know if Todd had this at the end with Dave or not the way that Tony did but he would know which words to like he would do finishing touches sometimes it's amazing yeah his instincts were terrific this is yeah fantastic and this is so cool oh there's one with a blue card but let's uh let's get to it in a second oh Hillary and Rick laio wow that was old um Time Capsule man you've got time capsules in your apartment buddy oh these last two were mine here yeah now that impeachment trial is winding down important to take a minute to reflect on what we've learned I have no idea what that would be just very today's the Senators debated behind closed doors each Senator got a maximum of 15 minutes on the floor it's the same policy Clinton had with the Oval Office in yeah so so and Clinton CL yeah like you know just uh that's a Tony thing right cuz on the page you would have said Clinton and then when Tony was writing it out on the Q card put a he put He put a CL there absolutely and that's a little Shand that the two of them had yep it's just super super interesting now you got one with a blue card here what's that one um I don't know this is actually I don't know why I oh it's a gag it's a joke it's a bit yeah uh um Stella loses Groove Stella looks for Groove Stella gets groove back oh okay so that's one of that I I don't know why I don't know why I have this you got one of the charts and graph jokes you just maybe it just one that I don't know why why this is here but I would grabb it too fantastic whoever wrote that is tip of the cap um oh I guess but was on the show yeah you should feel at home here tonight he's used to hang around guys with heart trouble Cheney and Letterman of course and trouble um and this was a Hillary joke again Tony uh taking the Liberty to do that you all know George Bush he's the candidate from out of town who's not running for Senate um re Clinton's having a great time last night Ln always means last night he was up at the barn chac chapaqua buying shots for the Bush twins oh you guys got a lot of Mile we you know there's a ton here the one there was one that I wanted to show you which was the uh the post one and that's that's one that uh to me oh yeah so Tony would sometimes do something like this like again this is the starting position this is before the the red and the underlining which is going to be on a separate card this is what we go to rehearsal with and then this he'll do you know even in rehearsal if he needs to cover something up quick now people are saying that he's been cheating at golf so what he'll do is he'll write it down here and then not take time to do that till he's back in his office that is so neat to see the process oh that is so great um oh yeah the one they giving away fures you remember fures oh yeah I need T um Bush campaign stand up stand up gig that's cool though and you did a lot of that while you were working for the show you still no I I quit standup completely when I worked for the show yeah had to just yeah and people would say to me doesn't doesn't it bother you that you're not doing your own jokes anymore that David Letterman's doing and I would say okay mean first of all when I do it 200 people hear it yeah and I said but most importantly it's David Letterman doing my jokes not me uh and I said and finally and and it's it's interesting comedians don't really get this a lot of them uh is that they he said don't you you know doesn't bother you you're giving all these jokes away I said no because they don't work in clubs they they don't really translate because standup is all internal it's all I you know what I hate you know what scares me whereas monologue is all looking outward observing the world around and Dave was one of the few Dave and really um Craig Ferguson he talked a lot about his alcoholism so forth and Dave you know always made himself the butt of the joke so there was a lot of I but I tell my students for the most part there's no I in mon in late night monologue that's all it's really about topical too right I mean all topical so topical it's all topical and the one a couple things make it harder for me I find it easier to write this stuff than than standup but uh one of the things um that you know with standup is things happen to you in life and that you know you hate something or you like something it comes out of your beliefs and your character yeah whereas when someone submits to a late night show there's no them to sell it so the joke has to be that much stronger than standup joke really has to jump off the page yeah no that makes a lot of sense that makes a lot of sense okay um okay so here's this one yes um now I believe this actually if I remember correctly was Bill shef's joke and this joke which uh the last joke um was my joke and then um it was reprinted the next day uh in the New York Post um and there's the card from it I know nothing about the S I knew nothing about the surgery and the operating room was very crowded there were three surgeons three nurses the anesthesiologist Paul and the p i mean what a great joke nice Bill nice work that was great so okay was jef what why was that Bill's joke like was he back at the time no at at at this time he was or was he like a faxer yeah basically no I wouldn't I mean look he's a good friend of Dave so I think he would probably just send some jokes you know directly to Dave and uh and um yeah I mean that's funny but you know at at that point I mean he was still really busy with the book so it was an occasional thing but yeah I always like that joke okay so say your joke though let's say your joke you know when I found out I had to have a quintuple bypass honestly my entire career Flash before my eyes and I'll be honest with you that most of it was awkward silences so as as a monologue writer I just did added something that I wouldn't uh add which was I said uh honestly my entire career flashed before my eyes I'll be honest I do not like repeating words jokes unless it's intentional sometimes you want the punchline to directly reflect the setup um that's very very very cool yeah I'm trying that's one that's one if it were a if if there was one to be framed I could see why this would be in contention for one that you would want to frame and put up that's a special special one from a special time um special memory special memory I wonder if you have any Carson jokes in this in this oh like it was so cold I'm sure these are mostly yours I would assume but but uh oh you mean jokes that Johnny actually wrote written by Johnny yeah okay so let's go over that again like when a joke from Carson would show up how did that get inserted in the monologue was that was that that was straight to Dave it went straight to Dave and then straight to Tony after that so if you gave him a list of in order say say you know 12 jokes or whatever it is for the monologue there might be a 13th or a 14th or might be edited around as far as I remember the Johnny jokes never went to me at all at all wow at all yeah the boys jokes went to me and all the factor jokes so this was a joke I wrote when I was on a retainer there and then I got the job the next day and Bill said this joke had a lot to do with me probably putting over the top and I think it's not not at all the greatest joke I ever wrote but for whatever reason to tickle Dave you know it's always different for everybody this was a joke uh we have the Twin Towers why you have Dolly Parton oh yeah that's when the whole audience was from uh uh Tennessee I guess oh okay yeah they brought in the audiences yeah they brought the audiences and so this this was my joke and in honor of our audience being from Nashville the hookers in Time Square bless her hearts are offering their country music special for an extra 50 bucks you get a ho down I am so not proud of that's a great joke that's a great joke thank you well cuz it leaves to the imagination as to like ho down is funny and then it leads to the imagination of what the hell a h down might be right but if you really analyze it it doesn't even logically make sense no it doesn't it's one of those extra 50 bucks or what are the first 100 bucks for aren't you getting her down for anyway this is uh okay I know you're a little humble to talk about this Gabe but I am super super super impressed with this so okay there's the degree but then this is the Emmy wall uh yeah those were um writer Guild uh I think we won one of those years Emmys we won every year I was there for a best comedy variety show Y and we got nominated as uh best writing all five of those years um how cool is that dude there's not a lot of people that can say there's not a lot of people that have a wall like this well it's it's yeah it could be considered extremely egotistical which it is but I now for me it's you know it's motivation for me it's like every year I want to get back there so oh this is so amazing weren't those great those are us um so one of the other cool things about Gabe was um his uh his his mentalism and so you asked about what he did and so he did five or six tricks I don't even want to call them tricks they were yeah it it was surreal it was surreal um like he pulled alara's name like he had me he had me and I didn't even write the name down but he had me think of her name and there was a couple little pieces of manipulation with and misdirection with pieces of paper and things like that but he ended up writing down alara's name and and I mean like the first thing he says to me okay so it's unusual name yeah yeah okay he goes yeah and there's two there's two A's in it yeah like like I'm like yep um and I'm not doing what he does any justice and I and I'm just if you have an opportunity to see Gabe abon do mentalism and and what he does it's it's does he do it in uh like does he do it on stage somewhere like can you go see Himes yeah he tours around for sure it's a pretty cool gig and he as sounds he just does and he did it one-on-one right at his kitchen table that's awesome and and for about a half hour 45 minutes like I spent a few hours at gabes um and uh we had a lot of fun and he gave me something and I got to choose which one I wanted oops and I wanted one that uh I wanted one where Dave made fun of the network well you can if you want but uh it's a you and I love Survivor and so this is a joke that Dave told and I gotta maybe look at get Don Giller to uh um to find out exactly the date of it but and maybe get the clip but uh you know you know welcome everybody my name is David Letterman cbs's only true survivor and then everyone you know does their thing and collaps through it thanks babe appreciate that I'm I'm helping well Survivor is over yeah ended last night so now 40 million Americans can now get back into the habit of not watching CBS oh laack love well it wasn't a lap track cuz at the time would laugh at it yeah it was good um and he signed the back of it to me do you want me to show that do you want to read it to Mike and the Letterman podcast Mike you're doing God's work I praise love the show and you for keeping it all alive a an incredible period in television history and now enjoyed by New Generation keep up the great work best Gabe ablen wasn't that cool yeah that's great wasn't that great uh more to come on this credit on this uh credit card on this Q card this Q card actually plays into our story on night three but um okay so after Gabe um Tuesday afternoon or yeah Tuesday afternoon between 12 and 1 uh I went to Jan Nicole's a yeah um lots of presents there some of which you haven't seen actually I don't know much about you you know you know you know one of the presents but you don't know and I'm going to show the presence here um but uh Jay Ryan so last week's guest on the Letterman podcast longtime friend of course two years ago we candy and I appeared on The Late Night playet great and uh and and it was so much fun appearing there with Jay and Nicole yeah um and they we used to do shows every every Tuesday and every Thursday uh live at 5 5m and they would be they would broadcast from the late night playset they have David Letterman's old desk um he Jay is the guy who stole the microphone we've told that story here before he's he's that guy he's the guy who stole the microphone and wants to make him ends desperately wants to give the microphone back to Dave personally um and is still trying to figure that out how he can how he can do that um but Nicole of course um if you if if you know them if you watch last week's episode um Nicole was diagnosed with Ms um I think eight or nine years ago and then five years ago um got to the point where she could no longer now these are people that both worked in Hollywood um you know Jay and Productions of All Sorts um you know he worked for Conan uh he came out came out west and um worked for all sorts of different shows David E Kelly shows and and and other things as well and Nicole was a power player in in in Hollywood she was a she represented some really massive yeah she represented massive comic talents and and and uh um a take no prisoners Ty Nicole is just a force of nature she is you know she was she R Chris Rock and she she opened the movie super bad you know like like she opened that movie from a PR standpoint like crazy crazy stuff like she's she's formidable um diagnosed with MS and has been declining unfortunately ever since and in November around American Thanksgiving um uh they they they stopped recording the late night playet and they want to do a few episodes and Jay talked about that a little bit last week but uh going to hang out with them was unbelievable because it was just us it was just us and and and we sat in the remember the that was the one part of your trip I was like oh I want to be there for that yeah I know and they send you so much love by the way I love them a lot yeah they send you so much love and and and um and and it was just sitting on the floor leaned up against the couch yeah Jay and Nicole and and I was leaned up against the the other side and we just looked and we talked for two hours three hours almost actually um it was uh it's really good to see my friends um it was it was it was good to converse with Nicole and and Jay and I got to the point where he and I were talking back and forth and back and forth because we haden't caught up in a while um and and and certainly not in person for two years and so um and then nocole would just chime in every once in a while and every time she chimed in it was something insightful or fun and and I mean did you get to hear that laugh I did she was the greatest laugh I got to hear the laugh a couple times um but not like she's she's sliding yeah um her health is sliding and and everybody's very aware and it's not an elephant in the room because we talk about it actually I really that I really appreciate the um candid vulnerability that both of them show if you get a chance um to see them on Facebook think they're very open about her about her travel in through this Ms Journey um and I help others through it if they yeah I really appreciate that they have the MS Foundation uh the autoimmunity foundation autoimmunity foundation.org yeah which is extremely important they're doing really really great work but I think that it has been you know um watching that I think is is so unique cuz I don't know if if people have been that open before and it's it's difficult to watch it's difficult but I like I will search for him he comes across my algorithm all the time because I make sure that I check in all the time on their um social media because I think it's really important to just know what's happening and what's going on and how you can help and yeah yeah great you can search Jay Ryan on Facebook J just the letter J Ryan yeah and um really autoimmunity foundation.org head on over there and and check that out um but it was just it was really cool hanging with them and um and and and and he's like you got to get out of here you got to go to the to the to the Paramount lot and I did um but I didn't want to go well we'll get to that in a second but let's get to the presents first but before I left uh he gave me a couple presents unbelievable um and I don't know what they are you know one of them um and one of them that I think is going to end up hanging right kind of up there potentially um but uh we'll get we'll save that for last uh there are a couple things uh first uh the first thing that he gave was um this is a replica of a perfect replica of Dave's original mic oh it looks good there I haven't had it on this table since we got back and uh so does this work this in its current form it doesn't work but the next he's like the next time you come down come down because I have since found all of the components inside that we can actually make it usable again and so um it was it was a prop for the set originally he he he he had it for me for a long time as a prop for our set because he used to have this in his office at his uh at his Studios and and and and and the production work he would do this was this would be his kind of totem that he would bring with him for every production which makes it so special to me because it's not just a replica of Dave's mic but it's also the one that Jay used to use and and and have as kind of a a good luck totem for his and so this means the world to me and it is a phenomenal piece for the set look at this thing like I mean come on so it's going to go beside the mug um and we'll figure out a way to display this um you know for the Letterman podcast moving forward so we thank him so much for that I love you Jay thank you for this um now you know who Annie lewitz is right I do we have a Lio witz he gave me Leo witz I saw Mark carsen the next day and he's like what yeah he Jay gave us an Annie libowitz he he had uh come up to it through a series of interesting events and he's like you know Jay's not a materialist not even a little bit yeah he's built the Back to the Future DeLorean he's built a Ghostbusters car he builds Ghostbusters Perfect movie perfect proton packs and things like but he's not a materialist at all he's got the hoverboard from Back to the Future screen U sitting on his wall but you okay it's it's none of the stuff matters to him uh all that matters is his wife and and and these things and and and and whatnot but um I don't think he feels that way about Dave's desk though I don't think we'll ever get Dave's desk room no no it's amazing we didn't even really go in the place that we just hung out there but I did see the VIS of it a few times it's like oh man there's Dave's desk sitting right there it's amazing uh but no he's not materialistic in any way and so he'd come across this and he's like well you want this I'm like yes Jay I want this very badly I don't you're going to feel about it but it's an Annie liebertz It's so you said original would you like me to hold that fire check that out no I want you to look at it first because you haven't seen it that where's that going well you tell me I mean that's a it's an N leavea wit you said yeah a that cool yeah it's neat super cool right like take your little you know character off right now Isn't that cool I don't have a character on it's not going above our bed no God no the living room piece anyway and then uh could you do me a favor could you get the um late night bumpers book off the shelf from behind you okay so this is Mark caren's book we're on Caren later and uh look at this this is an original Late Night with David Letterman crew jacket this was from the very first year and look what he included in the pocket see the picture picture y isn't that amazing that's super cute isn't that amazing like like what a little touch but anyway this uh and I know who's I know which staffer it was who owned this jacket and I'm actually G to reach out and make sure that you know he's cool like but it's uh this is an original Late Night with Jen lman crew jacket is that like that's a that's really cool this is one of the OG jackets and I I do think that at some point I think the set is going to be rotating I think we're g to be there's going to be things that go on and come off the set for each episode and whatnot like on a stage oh like in the round the Letterman podcast in the round the next level oh I'm excited rting oh my gosh I'm so excited I think I'm gonna have to start renting uh space yeah well you know if your thing takes off you know I can just maybe take this whole room over okay when your thing takes off he changed it things are going good yeah yeah okay um so day two continues uh so thank you to Jay um and Nicole and Jay and Nicole I love you both very much and there their stories not done we went and saw them uh you know for Good Vibes breakfast on the Friday um and I'll I'll talk about that that finishes the show but almost actually finishes the show is a little meeting in Portland that I had on the way home um but that Tuesday night Tuesday night so so Jay's like you got to get out of here buddy you got to get out of here because um okay so my next Letterman alum encounter uh is Chris Harris now Chris Harris of course writer for a long period of time for Dave um on Late Show uh then moved on and became part of some other projects and um currently is the executive producer of Frasier of of the continuation they call it a reboot I don't think it's a reboot yeah I don't I don't look at Frasier as a reboot at all um they started another you know after I think it's 20 years or whatever it is the story just continue Fraser moves back to Boston oh is it good we love it we do we love that show if you and and the thing I love about it there's a few things I love about I love that it's a classic like I remember when he was on the show here and of course we talked about all the letter moments go back and watch the Chris Harris episode Chris he's such an amazing guy like he's such an amazing guy um gave us uh is also wrote two children's books yeah and they're so sweet so sweet you know gave sent sent them up here for our granddaughter fora video on the Letterman podcast YouTube channel of Alara getting and opening the the best video it's the best video on your and and and it's cool because um um I read I read it toara he does and she loves it she does like she she gets sometimes she gets like kind of zombie like and starts to you know get that way that little six-year-old girls get you know when they about to go to sleep sometimes she giggles and laughs from it yeah and it's just such an amazing experience um reading this book and uh so so he's he Chris is that guy he's just creative and optimistic and happy um he is just he's he he's a light he's a light in this world he really really is so how how did I'm keep you on track no no no please how did um uh you so you me you messaged him and then he was like hey come down to a taping yes there's a group of people that I messaged along the way um that I was coming down there and and and um and Chris was was one of them and he said Hey listen and there's some people who have when they come on the show off camera they're like hey if ever you're down in La we got to hang out like I get that I get I get that a lot which I'm so damn grateful for yeah um it's a it's a it's a super super cool place um and they love you well some of them I guess I mean I'm certain the ones that don't don't return my calls but that's okay well that's all right why don't I just hang out with the ones who do return a lot of fun doing that doing it that way instead of focusing on the other thing right um so anyway yeah so Chris was like hey man yeah I would love to hang out with you but we're shooting Frasier season two premiere oh that was the premiere premere on Tuesday night and he goes you want to come down to it I'm like yes yes Chris yes love I would love to do that because because you know I feel like I've been on the journey the first time where he said um not right now to coming on the show was because they had just been announced that they were building the the they were building it and they were going through to get through season one and he didn't know how it was going to go and all that and then he came on the show and we talked about it and I was able to ask him some questions about it but this is well before it was released that that kind of a thing and but you and I watched it and and and enjoyed the hell out of it I love the fact that they release it weekly uh they don't release it all at once it's it's super cool I hope Paramount does something that they did with Yellowstone this year year you know this year Paramount put Yellowstone on CBS um and got huge ratings and it's driven people to Paramount plus so I hope Paramount does that with Frasier somehow I hope they do too because it's really good show so good and I was really happy when it was green lit for a season two and and and um have you ever been to a taping like that so never to a sitcom taping and and this sitcom taping was on the Paramount lot uh stage 18 which is the same place where rear window was shot um now it's the biggest stage for a sitcom might be ever it's got over 300 uh 300 people were in there um five stages for all of the for all of the uh um the the sets and um you know so the firehouse was there Fraser's office the bar the apartment the the yeah the apartment and and and it was it was a it was amazing and and we had such a um it was such a good experience being invited by the executive producer uh you know I get to the Paramount lot and and and and you know the you know oh yeah come on over here this way you go in I was on a list where I got I got a sandwich they gave me actually they gave me two sandwiches which is good I hadn't eaten in a long time um I didn't had any didn't which was a worry of mine that you wouldn't eat on this trip why because I'm the one who makes us eat there's plenty of time to eat and I got plenty of you know whatever to you know I got plenty of stuff to fuel that um we can eat later but it was nice getting a couple of sandwiches and so I got the sandwiches and and and and uh and and I go into the studio audience I've got a special seat assigned and and which is cool it was like kind of dead center one row up F and yeah and so it's like okay you're looking around and I've got lots of pictures and video lots of pictures and video I'll splice into this but um and and and and it's neat to watch the way that sitcoms are shot because they literally will take their little uh camera sets you know all four cameras or whatever and they'll move from set to set and and and the production moves with them now now one of the the cool things that I noticed right away as the production people started coming down um James Burrows legendary director James Burrows directed that episode of Frasier oh that's so cool and I mean you think back to I mean the legendary director of cheers and then I found out later that the casting director is the same casting director that was on Cheers and and they've tried to they have kept the spirit of cheers and Frasier as much as they possibly can even in 2024 that the first he had directed uh I don't believe so I don't believe so I I I but but he had just celebrated 50 years of directing sitcoms wow and seeing Jim buroughs and hearing him because after the scenes were done you'd hear him and here's the coolest part I and I I can almost like I'm so happy for Chris coming from where he's come to where he is right now and to hear Jim Burrows say Chris is that okay a like it was okay so so I I I'm getting a little bit ahead of myself so the show was about to start they had the audience warm-up Guy come out and the audience warm-up guy gets everybody into this fervor um and and uh um ksey gramar comes up and he's like three feet from me and he's giving this speech to the audience about the season premiere and I tried to get some of it on video I didn't get I didn't get it but I uh he's given this speech about how how pleased he is that he gets to still play this character at this time and he like he's starting to tear up it's a season premiere right and they they they you know they hadn't known for terribly long that they about the green light for season two and and he was so happy a he was so happy so grateful and and and did I kind of get a chance to meet him yeah I did after and this is where the story goes so so so he does that and everyone's like oh clapping and so happy and all this sort of stuff and and and and he leaves and and the audience guy goes okay we're gonna get going here you know make sure lots of laughs and all that sort of stuff so I'm sitting beside a couple of folks um an actor but I didn't know he was an actor his name is rapael he used to in the show called aoko and and and and his and his girl who's in a band and uh we're just shooting the bowl back and forth or whatever and um it uh it it it came into uh the conversation that we were both invited by Chris we were all invited by Chris and um and and and he you know because Chris works on on on aabo and and and and and Rafael was talking about how amazing uh it is to work for Chris and how great of a boss he is and all of these things and and and and we just we're just shooting the bowl having fun and U and I told them about the lon podcast and they were asking what really that's cool talking about that and then it show started we watched a couple scenes be filmed it was great and then suddenly we look over and there's Chris at the front of the aisle now we were watching him and he was literally running the show like like don't get me wrong Jim was Jim was you know making thing the the trains run on time but CHR Chris was running the show like after every shot he would make sure that Chris was okay and Chris they would re-shoot some scenes putting different lines in different places that were you know let's try it this way let's try that and and and Chris was a guy who was the driving force behind that I'm like oh man this is amazing and he was he was a he was a light he was literally a light and we were watching him Buzz around or whatever and and we even said like as we were sitting there watching isn't it cool to watch him do that yeah it's so cool and then a couple scenes later we look at the end of the island there's Chris he's like hey guys oh jeez Chris say hi I love sweet of them and he's like hey come on a we got up and we went down to the floor and for the rest of the shoot which was most of it we were in Chris Harris's back pocket nice like the executive producer and and and and and so like it was so fun and uh the second scene while we were down there Chris went off somewhere and and we were watching a scene and Kelsey was in that scene and I turn and look to my right and there's Kelsey gramar right beside me watching the episode be shot he just looks at me he says how you doing I'm like hey nice to see you I'm a friend like be cool be cool yeah like I'm a friend of Chris I didn't say it was letter podcast guy or anything like that yeah even though I had it loaded up I remember an appearance a specific appearance where where Kelsey was on Letterman and um and and he was talking about dreams that he had and and one of the dreams was I just remember he accented the word porposes I was playing with the porposes or something like that and he accented the word porposes I remember remember that and I wanted to I and I was ready in case Letterman ever came up but it didn't and I wouldn't ever ever ever ever do that I just have a friend of Chris he's so great and this is this is so awesome and I'm I'm so happy for you guys oh thank you you know and and his voice is deep oh velvety you want him to read you one of Chris's stories oh I do I you want him to read you one of his children Chris Harris's children's books you set that up uh I can't but um I would listen to that every I sleep like a baby oh he was and just he just he was so kind that night to everybody he just was love doing stories like that oh and when they messed up on like it was fun watching the little bloopers and things like that like watching and and and and also a master thespian like literally the the the the the long passages that would come out of his mouth and then there would be a blooper of some sort and then he would either do it exactly the same which was impressive yeah or he would play with it a little bit and and it was it was it was really impressive to watch all these people work uh it was it and it was an entertaining episode I can't wait to watch the premier when it's premiering do you know I don't know when it premieres I assume it's gonna be you know what I can't even yeah I mean I think it's be before the fall that'd be great but I yeah I know we'll we're going to enjoy it like we we uh got the Paramount plus and we one of the reasons why we keep it is because of the Frasier so uh that's right yeah it was it was really really good um and then I got um afterwards Chris gave me like five minutes of his time he's going to come back on the show can't wait to come back on the show obviously when when things get a little less hectic for him but I'm just so proud of him like and it was funny talking to that uh the the former casting the casting director talking to a couple of the other producers on the show um I don't know why they don't do a podcast like I I it's fascinating to me the television history that's in that production and the love and the care that they have behind the scenes never mind the actors themselves but with cheers and Frasier and there's the history of his franchise goes back way Deep Way deep in the heart of of all of Gen X and I think it would be like they should before and I hate saying this but like you know Ted's getting up there and well Ted dancing I mean like you know uh yeah like he's got to be well we're watching the good place right now that's why you pulled that because we're watching the good place again what do you mean I pulled that I knew I well he was in cheers yeah he has he's not in Frasier though know but to spin up at the franchise absolutely oh no they're they're all getting up there like like Jim I mean he's been doing it for 50 years well you know and and and uh boy is it it was it was it was historic to find out how Dan okay you go find out how to T Dan and is while we do this but but seeing Chris I I and it was funny I I'm not telling Tales out of school by saying this part um I said to him I'm so proud of you and it wasn't condescending in any way it was more like you know awe that he's how old do you think he is 74 76 76 hey Ted Danon you look fantastic he does look fantastic yeah Qui you 76 but never mind doesn't matter I don't want to know um Sam Malone Sam Malone yeah uh no I said to Chris I said I'm really I'm so proud of you and I was I was in awe of him that's watching him run this production the way that he was and there wasn't one person from the person who um at the beginning of the gate with the check me in who invited you and and all the way up to when people found out who who who were like he is the most amazing man yeah that's the kid too see like that you love that I do and and I mean like anybody would love that but like it's it's neat when like you know there's nothing worse than if you meet somebody and they just don't quite not not that this would be Chris but even like like um Kelsey yeah know like that how many times that happen that's what they say never met your hero not that you know but I've told you my trick for that right I don't I I I've told you obviously but I don't know if I told the audience this uh the trick to that is that you can be immune to that idea never met Your Heroes you're going to be disappointed you could be absolutely immune to that and the way you're immune to that is um you um don't have any expectation whatsoever yeah and I just don't have any expectation don't expect anything and and and and and then they don't disappoint anything you'll never be disappoint appointed yeah uh but that being that's R of life that's what that's actually a good rule of life it is it is so um and then walking out of the Paramount lot I look and there's a food truck there and I'm like and I don't know if I I might be offside here so Chris if you're watching I don't know if Chris is watching but um if you're watching and I'm offside here I'm I'm sorry but I don't think I am because I was truthful so it's a Philly cheese steak food truck now at this point here it's been like three hours taping was was away was a long time it's dark and I'm walking through since my two sandwiches um and so I look at the the cheese steak truck and I'm like I want a cheese steak so I walk in I'm like hey you
