okay hi this is Chris Harris and you are watching the Letterman podcast welcome once again to the Letterman podcast my name is Mike Chisum I am stoked Mark malov is back and I'm okay I'm I would be stoked if Mark malov was back no matter what but I am even more stoked because Mark malov is not just back here uh as a guest on the Letterman podcast he is back in the podcasting world and that is an extremely exciting notion he is doing um he's expanded out so as you probably know if if it's your first time here and you haven't seen this before obviously uh Mark malov is uh I'm excited about this because he was the host of the the Carson podcast the Carson podcast was absolutely an amazing body of work that is still out there I highly recommend those who are officially AOS of late night and want to know about um you know the reverence everyone sees this reverence for Johnny Carson Conan's got it Letterman's got it all these people have this amazing reverence for Johnny Carson well Mark malov went out and he just chased his dream and and and created this body of work that is in my opinion the definitive um you know anecdotal Archive of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and many of the tangental relationships around it so if you're a letterman fan there are a ton of amazing uh Letterman related uh Carson podcasts so I highly recommend going in going back to that but now let's go to the present so two years ago right as soon as he finished the run on the Carson podcast that's when the Letterman podcast began now Mark malov is back his batteries are charged and he is back with a new podcast called inside late night and I am so excited that he is he's teamed up with late nigh.

comom we've been talking about them a little bit we want to promote late nigh.

comom as much as possible please sign up for their newsletter as well um I had a meeting with Jed uh when I was coming back from La that's going to be on our La recap episode number three I believe I'm going to talk about that but uh at the end of the day Mark is taking this formidable knowledge that he has inside of him this freakish knowledge that he has and and body of experience too and has expanded out from Carson and is doing an entire podcast on late night um I am so so excited to have you back markk you are my brother from another mother you're my podcasting cousin I'm so happy for you and that you're back in the podcasting game I've listened to the first two episodes already um the spike fison one I've listened to twice and I'm so happy you're back how does it feel to be back in the podcasting World thanks Mike thanks for having me back it feels strange I mean it's been a year and 8 months and it wasn't until uh that I I let the announcement came that I I suddenly felt just this love and relief and just that this is a good reason that I'm coming back I just a year and a half away from anything it's an eternity and I just wasn't sure if I came back especially um doing something that wasn't just Carson how people would respond um it feels great like I've always for years wanted to talk to spike um I just never I just couldn't really justify having him on Carson podcast there wouldn't been enough but he was like the guy that I had I mean you can tell just I mean my my that my mind just goes just um hyperfocused to to hopefully things he doesn't normally talk about I tried to get in for every episode I do um trying to get things um new things or things that are rarely talked about out there and uh both of my first two guests Rachel dra and Spike have been phenomenal but um yeah Spike's Dave stories amused me to no end the um you know I I got to ask you this because U one of the things um I love in life are Fox old buddies people that are around that can totally relate from their perspective um when Rachel said to you uh you know wow she said it I think twice or three times in the episode she said wow you've really done your research you really know your stuff is there any more music to a podcaster ears than when they say that when the guest says that to you it's really nice I don't really think about it too much um it is I mean I sent Rachel a clip um a newspaper thing I found of something but to me I just feel um I don't know anxiety not having those things and just hopefully just you know we've talked about this respecting the guest enough to do as much research as I can to to try to not give them the same cookie cutter questions I'm not gonna ask Rachel dra how how she came up with Debbie Downer because she's been talk she's talked about it so many times I'm not going to ask her about the lovers with Will frell same thing I mean it's easily googleable and she's answered it I've interviews just forever so trying to just take a different approach um to what interests me and hopefully um yet questions they haven't been asked and um going to places that um hopefully they they might may have may have forgot about because it was so long ago but bringing them back to things that that again that no nobody really knows too much um so yeah we'll see what happens but I've recorded I think like with five or six guests so far okay so can you give us a preview who have you um I've I was with um Robert Smigel we together I've known him since I was 17 um I was with um David Cross and um yeah we talked about his one and only Dave appearance he did was on with guest host Jenny Garo his friend but he did one Dave um so we talked about that and then I was with Rob cery we talked about his two Dave appearances um trying to think I have some scheduled ones I I don't want to mention until they're done but I mean um those are some of the people that I've recorded with so far that's fantastic we want to do a a deep dive into the uh into the guest hosts on on on Late Show because that's a fascinating um that's a fascinating piece of of of of history on on the Letterman side of things you know it was funny uh when we talked to Morty um and I don't know I don't think you and I talked about this since uh in your last or not one of the things that he kind of dropped was there was a point where Rosie O'Donnell was going to be the permanent guest host for Late Show with David Letterman and they kind of backed away from it at that point because at that point um the attitude of you don't give up the chair for anybody are you sure sorry go ahead are you sure it wasn't because I have been told Rosie O'Donnell was quoted as saying that she was being considered by NBC for the permanent position of um of Leno's guest host on Fridays and um so she was so you're saying is that she was both shows wanted her to be the guest host I'm saying before her show because there was an exodus of of of some Letterman people who went over to Rosie's show and whatnot so I remember there was talk around in that area there was talk I know I was I thought that was a okay so you and I didn't talk about this the last time that's the thing they blur together they all all this stuff as you you you you know get all this information from people they blur together so you and I haven't talked about that before um but the the decision ultimately was you know so it was a strong consideration at that point they were really leaning in that direction but then you know either Dave or the staff round or a combination of both said you know what we're gonna back away from that you don't give up the chair so interesting yeah that's what Jay said to Rosie I mean I Jay I talked to him he says it didn't happen Rosie said that Littlefield said we want you on Fridays and that Jay said I don't want anybody guess hosting it was going to be um yeah and that's according to her and Jay he he says it didn't happen or maybe the message didn't get to him but Rosie went on record um saying that but that's interested that that the one person that what you're saying is she was being thought about for both shows compliment to her there you go and see I wouldn't have known that about Jay it wasn't this is where this is where the iron sharpens iron I appreciate you saying that part uh so but then that being said there were guest host for late show and it was when Dave uh you know uh during during his part episode and also dur shingles there were times where there were guest hosts on on on late show and uh the genie grao one the nor McDonald one um you know with Tom Snyder I thought was absolutely amazing Tom Green did it and and I mean I want to have as far as I'm concerned every single one of these people I want to have on the show to talk about this stuff uh David Cross must have been a fantastic conversation he was I mean you know I was there when um Janine guest hosted the show and I actually I have an episode at some point it's gonna come out that I recorded before the pandemic in front of a live audience where I had Janine and because I was gonna do something like this but I wasn't sure test it out and she talked about Guest hosting the show yeah David Cross I mean I told I told him I have the date this is how com nerdy I am with comedy I I know the exact date we met I was 20 and he was 32 this was when I was in a sophomore in college and I remember where we met and it was a pretty wild night not in terms of um drinking or or alcohol or drugs or anything it was just wild to where I wound up because he took me along with him I had met him on the street I was a huge Mr show fan and at the time it was the first season that only aired and nobody really knew about it and um we kind of headed off and um yeah it was that that we talk about that night and then I talked to him about his Letterman he doesn't know why he was not asked back on Dave but we talked about he has he does have a guess so um probably G to ask Don Giller if I can look at the episode or something just to say but um but it is one of those things where yeah David I had a lot of questions a lot of um yeah Mr Show and talk about Saturday Night Live too because he auditioned and met with Lauren and stuff I mean he has talked about that somewhat but I had some other questions about it but yeah David Cross was definitely high on on my list um that I wanted to talk to so he was really nice you've done a really good job right now of sort of showing how you've broadened uh from from from the Carson Viewpoint into to you know late night as a genre itself you've done a really really good job of just basically summing up your podcast because you talked to David Cross about all of the different uh late night experiences from the different franchises that he was a part of you certainly did that with Rachel as well and and and and Spike as well you I mean a lot of SNL came up in that episode and and whatnot is it freeing for you to be able to kind of because you have this immense knowledge and breadth of experience too you've you've you've touched a lot of these shows personally throughout the last couple of decades is it freeing for you to be able to kind of talk about stuff outside of Carson it is it just really depends on the person in the show like there's definitely names with certain shows I don't know how interested I'd be in or if I'd be um I'm going to be more opinionated in the show and I just want to be very careful with some um with some of of the people I talked with with some of the shows um but um yeah it's definitely more free I mean my my specialty is Saturday Night Live I know more about SNL than I do Carson going into it uh so it's gonna be asnl but like listen I I invited guest already from like the Steve Allen Jack par Carson Cavin I'm I I I'm trying to you know we're going to do Allen thick of the night we're going to do magic hour aren you're doing thick of the night oh I'm trying to Encompass I'm trying to really Encompass everything it just obvious ly it's harder to get people from like Jack par and Steve Allen just because people are you know really older and there aren't a lot of people left but I mean in terms of the yeah the spectrum of uh of what is late night with you know Cav and Midnight Special I am going after um everybody I can just right now the um the people I've been able to connect with so far or from the younger shows but I definitely want to go with the full um the full range yeah that's it's so great and um I gotta tell you uh Jed Rosen zwag I shout out right now I am so grateful for late nigh.

comom I I am you know I've i' the moment I realized that it existed I reached out to him and I just I thanked him up and down and I I continually will do that can you imagine if late nigh.

comom existed like 15 years ago like this is one of those things where I I'm I'm so long overdue as far as I'm concerned uh when did your association with them begin Jed listened to the Carson podcast um and was a really big supporter of mine and we had talked on the phone a bunch of times and it was one of those things always thought about maybe doing something like this in in Jed was very encouraging it's like if you ever do let me know um and it just the timing was really good I mean yeah I think that jet does a fantastic job and again yeah um there's nothing else like it I mean late nigh.

comom you have what is um Bill Carter title is editor at large I editor at large yeah and um yeah you got the guy from The New York Times who covered late night for years the late shift so um I think that and you know he's got an exclusive he got an exclusive with Jimmy Fallon I know he talked to some Daily Show peeps so um yeah it's definitely what they're doing is exciting and you know it's just only in its infancy so to see where it's going to go is uh exciting I'm happy to be a part of it yeah I mean I you know I'm I'm I'm uh I I've thrown myself at Jed many times and and we uh we we met in person uh about a week ago week and a half ago and it was just it was so cool he's such a great great guy and and listening to him um you know talk about and want to preserve this stuff but also be a trade like to be like the variety except of of you know the trade publication for uh the late night genre and all the the happenings within the genre I I think that um Bill did a good job the last time he was on this show talking about how there's not a lot of appointment television anymore and and late night is one of those things sporting events and and late night is one of those things where it's topical it's uh it is appointment television in so many ways and the fact that it's being gathered together and curated um both on the business side but also the historical side and all the other things that like you're talking about that um as it does grow from infancy forward it's just really really exciting late night nerds like us um again I just wish this thing was available you know back in the day long overdue yeah I agreed I'm just glad that that somebody that they did it I mean yeah definitely it's one of those things where uh just to be able to go to the ratings and see who's going to be coming up on the shows and just um yeah I mean just the highlights of everything I think that yeah they're just doing a fantastic job and uh yeah I'm happy to be able to talk to people um yeah from the I want to talk to some of the current shows too um there's definitely I've reached out to some of that as well it's it's definitely you have some overlap like um I talked to Alex Bay for for for one of my other podcasts that I don't do anymore and um he you know he's he was at Saturday Night Live for like 10 years and then he was he's at Seth Meers and integral um to that show I mean after Seth he's the most valuable person and stuff so you have certain people um that have been around that I think um would are just going to be great to to uh to talk to that are current writers and um great to talk to some current hosts I'm definitely going to knock on some doors we'll see um never never know in Carson podcast I never expected the thing to go more than seven episodes we went to almost 400 i' I've talked to I talked to about 400 people and it was like the biggest people you could imagine and I had no idea it it was going to happen it would if if somebody would have told me I don't know if I would have believed them that I would be talking to who I was and going into living rooms and and homes and being invited but um we'll see well and you're preaching to the choir on that like again I same thing I've said this I say it probably once a week to somebody um I'll I'll make this statement if you would have told 25-year-old Mike that he would you know uh uh be friends with Robert Morton at some point and have these amazing conversations with some of these amazing people and I mean I I say Robert but I mean also like will I I actually I hate even naming one or two of them because I'm leaving out a Legion of people who I actually consider and they consider me a friend now and I be able to have these conversations and be able to take the shine of the show and spot it on them and and and put it out there it doesn't matter if it's for hundreds or thousands or whatever it doesn't matter where this thing goes I've already won because I've been able to have these conversations it's already like a life Victory it's the most amazing thing in the world I'm so glad to hear that yeah I just found a photo of Morty and myself when I just had moved to New York when I was 18 it was so funny I'm front of like the Sullivan entrance the office entrance yeah just never um yeah I'm the same way it's just like I can't believe um yeah full circle well and I'm so happy I'm so happy for you that you're still doing it um let's talk a little bit about Carson stuff uh that that Carson book's finally gonna come out yeah Bill zi um Bill told me it would never come out yeah um yeah I it was definitely surprising to me just because he told me I don't know he had like 30% done Y and um yeah I guess um yeah I don't really know much about it other than I I know the gentleman that his Tate took over from Esquire and I know it's coming out in in uh November but uh I don't really know that much um other than um yeah I mean definitely he I think he talked to he didn't talk to Dave Letterman I know that but I think it seems like he probably talked to almost everyone else so um yeah I'm I'm be the first one to buy it I can't wait yeah well I'm right behind you and that was uh that was my sort of around the corner way of asking I know you you're involved in a super secret Carson project and I can't talk about it so that was my kind of way of going oh hey the book's coming out hey the thing that you're doing forward I am working on a Carson thing as soon as I'm legally not legally but I'm told I can talk about it I will but you have been working on something burned out of my mind for um a couple years now but we'll see but it'll it's it's tangible and it's I'm proud of it and it's good it's just oh man a lot but um yeah it's great like I that feel like Carson's still relevant I just saw that like I think it was Brook Shields was just on Fallon and Fallon was asking about her going on Carson I don't know if they showed the clip and stuff but love when the late night shows host bring it up and just like and unfrosted which was number one wasn't that wasn't that beautiful yes yeah yeah I mean it was a big it was big it was big time and um so I get a kick out of that um yeah when stuff like that um happens and stuff and Carson still around so it's weird because um you know listening to Dave's episode on on Strike Force 5 going around the room talking to them say well okay yeah you all were on were any of you on Johnny's show and talking to the big five hosts of the day and and and hearing and it was it seemed like almost like it was news to Dave um but the audience also and that's the one thing about Dave that's so beautiful is that he uh many times will project the Viewpoint of the audience the the the broad Viewpoint and saying that you know oh yeah well were any of you on Carson and all five of the hosts of today no none of them really had an encounter with him and and that is a weird that's a that's a weird place to be and it's part of the the thing that I I assume with you and and certainly for me as well uh makes me tick inside of wanting to build that bridge and create that level of knowledge for the the generation that's here like this is the biggest star of the world of the day and now the big five uh talk show hosts out there that connection is it's getting further and further and further away so it is yeah I guess Conan wasn't on that right because Conan met Carson um twice but he wasn't on that that that um yeah with that no that's that he wasn't on Strike Force 5 yeah The Simpsons and then um and then I think he he met him at another time as well but the simps the one he likes to talk about it was leading up to when he was hosting they had the center for communications um lunch in at the plaza yes hotel and John was was um honored and Conan was introduced to him so they have that and like the only other person who I feel like came closed was John Stewart maybe getting booked on The Tonight Show but with Carson but John Stewart said I still sucked at the time but I think he would have done very well and I think if the show would have gone another year John Stewart probably would have got him both and Johnny would have loved him but yeah speaking of John Stewart isn't it interesting uh Carter when he came on a couple months ago we talked about this um you you talk about these people that are being elevated um and you know certainly felt it when Conan appeared on The Tonight Show uh not too long ago um and and and John Stewart is the same sort of thing you know there was a time when Dave kind of he got this place of elevation happened where he was bigger than the guest and he became you know I I call him powerful Dave for shorthand and it's fun watching some of these people who are newer become Giants now Conan certainly is and John Stewart certainly is as well it is very interesting uh watching John Stewart come back into the world of late night yeah John has been missed I mean his Apple show I thought that they did some great stuff but it was it's one of those things that it's a little bit like when Conan went to TBS I mean people watched I but it wasn't it's just it wasn't the same uh I could think just I feel like once Conan started his podcast and his HBO thing that he does now but his podcast it's just like new energy and just that was like the perfect format I think John coming back home especially with the um yeah that a larger studio audience and he maybe had on Apple it just um seems like he's he's home and it's just great to see him back and he's missed and they're really smart to record the Q&A um which was always my favorite part about going to those shows if somebody would ask me to come over the Q&A um the q&as were always um really great I mean every show I've ever been to at the Q&A other than um Fallon doesn't do it because Carson didn't do it but well Fallon during in the middle of the tapings now will do it but I'm talking about like pre-show and stuff like that but uh yeah I went to Kimmel a couple weeks ago Kimmel doesn't do it either but he does do uh in the first commercial break he'll do he'll come out and do an interaction with somebody in the audience yeah he used to um the first bunch of the years he would do it before the show and then rickle said what do you doing you cuz he was doing it because Dave Letterman would he knew Dave would come out before the show so and then Rickles was like why do you want to do that you're messing up the momentum it's like you want to be shot through a cannon so and Kimmel's like Rickles was absolutely right so yeah the um yeah you know it's it's funny you talk about the homages that these these these people have for uh for that in particular the Q&A I think about uh both Dave and Conan have something in common um you know know Dave near the end of his run on Late Night on Late Show I should say he talked about how sometimes the most interesting part of the night for him was the Q&A and you look at Conan now as well you know Conan O'Brien needs a friend is a phenomenal podcast and he could you know fill it with celebrities forever if he chose to but one of the things he keeps talking about and you look at the new travel show as well he likes to go and talk with regular people he loves that aspect and it's interesting how some of these uh these these these hosts the Curiosity isn't so much about celebrity anymore it's for Americana or or the people out there who who appreciate their work it's interesting how they kind of move in that direction yeah I mean Carson shined when he would talk to the people that weren't famous I mean a lot of famous people let's face that are boring um and yeah I mean he if you can get somebody and I'm sure these people are all pretty screen just to make sure they're they they're good talkers and okay to be on camera and stuff but yeah I think that that is always been wonderful and Dave with the Q&A especially um was always amazing but he just he always um he wouldn't go longer than what two minutes or three minutes until um Allan calter started doing the warm-up and then the audience is starting getting better and then I wish I could have been some of those audiences when he was doing the 15minute Q&A which I when I was told that I was like you got to be kidding me he would stay out there for that long sometimes 20 minutes somebody told me up to um I don't know I don't know you I don't know how long our exchange is I've seen this no I've seen this it's aming of course I I don't know how long the exchange was but I keep asking like I I'll I'll every once in a while I'll ask Walter I'll ask I ask Shey before he pass is there is there a chance that was recorded because to me that was about seven or eight minutes I mean I don't think so do he said on the house cameras probably but whether it was kept whether it was kept is the another is the other thing like it might have been recorded that night and then potentially probably not archived and certainly not catalog it's probably somewhere but knowing Dave he just I mean they were going to release a DVD set a decade or two ago and it's all ready to go and they had the art and everything he just I think yeah I don't know maybe something will change and stuff it just seems reluctant sometimes um for things like that but um I'm just glad that the last Bunches of years he had he had so much more fun out there than he he was before with the audience as being good I mean that was always the number one criteria was the audience um for him and I think probably for most H but definitely um yeah with him it's interesting um I was at uh I was at kiml and I was at uh the the season premiere of the season premiere of Frasier uh happened while I was down in LA and Chris Harris who was a writer for Dave is now the EP on Frasier and so he you know I was so grateful he invited me to the taping while I was down there and and and it's interesting watching I actually got the guy from Kimmel um the audience uh warmup Folk and and it's interesting watching I was at colar a few months ago and then comparing it to the Kimmel experience and comparing it to the guy who who who kept the Frasier audience just at a high level throughout the entire taping like it was very very interesting to see the different approaches that these people would make and it made me think back to Dave and and and how yeah Alan calter I loved his warmup I thought it was really good um but then Dave really became that guy I mean the indoctrination began of course with the audience coordinators as you're coming in like I think with Late Show I don't know of another experience that was like that where you were really prepped before you even entered the uh the audience chamber um but but but Dave was really the guy everyone was so happy to see him when he would bound out without the jacket he would have the the the microphone in hand and he was the one that really put the finishing touches on that it's very interesting to see how audiences are warmed up for these shows is I mean Paul mrio at The Daily Show is the best I've ever seen he's Relentless well I would just say if you were there he's Relentless with getting the audience being like this is how loud you have to be with your laughter and he did the same thing with over at John Stewart and it's like when people I have to laugh at this because he's did the thing where it's like say ha right did he do that with you ha he did yeah Co be yes absolutely he would do that whenever he came over to substitute the audiences were always amazing and he just he is so relentless with getting the audience to just do a really loud laugh and feel responsible and guilty if they don't um he is he is the best I've ever seen so um yeah you have him and then the sitcom Tans I don't know how long frasure was but some of those sepcom tapings take five hours was abouts it was about three hours they really shouldn't so that's more like the long game so that's like a different approach in itself but um yeah I mean it was fun like you the Eddie Brill and Wall-E Collins and then you had Bill shaft I saw I think I saw everyone but Wall-E I never saw Wall-E do it but I know I knew Wall-E and haven't seen him in a while but um yeah everybody have doing like their own thing to um yeah I never got to see Wendell do it on the old show but I saw um on an NBC but I got to see uh shef and he did a really good job well yeah I was gonna ask about Chef that's that's one we don't talk about very very often um how long did Chef do it for I don't I think he might have taken over from Wendell in like maybe 90 or something something like that I was there in 92 and Chef know I mean I've talked about this probably maybe not but yeah he would do the he would talk about um he would talk about um there was a bit about like the homeless in New York and it was like um like on like the on a tour bus and it was like um almost like the tourists like for homeless people are on the bus this is bad now to think about but like like like look like tourist are like looking at as like an animal on his like a zoo kind of and stuff with the different people and stuff and he did I could be getting that wrong a little B that's great no but that's great material because the majority of the audience are are from out of town did well and then he said like he said like I can always tell if it's a we can always tell here at the um if it's a good audience um One Clap if you're um out of town okay clap if you're New York um clap if you're over this Edge clap if you're under this age clap if you find the um if you find the the TV show Full House hilarious yes no one would clap and he'd say we have a good show that was their determination that was his determination if no one clapped when you find the found the TV show Full House and he he substituted that for Family Matters once I saw too hilarious and that was y that was Bill um but yeah with his unlit cigar W in the suit and um the NBC show oh my goodness when such a like that tiny studio and Dave coming up right in front of everyone it was just that was that was just amazing that was the best yeah and uh you know speaking of Dave and and there's a lot of cool stuff um that's come out this year and that is coming out we just uh on the heels of of announcing two more my next guests Charles Barkley and Miley Cyrus that's gonna be heard about that yeah it's F they found their voice I think like the first season they were trying to still figure it out like anything and stuff I thought that they did a good job but um yeah Dave Dave's great I'm just so glad I mean there people that were saying that after he retired they thought it'd be like Carson with him not showing up but he's and then he's producing that that a movie he's producing a few movies right so yeah it's great that he's doing um another season and showing up on melany show and I just I think the C Bear thing is just great because I knew I knew when Stephen asked him to be this is my understanding to be a guest when like before Stephen launched and Dave's just saying it was to be too hard to come back and just I never thought he would but I mean yeah I'm just glad that to see him back there and that his old home did you and I talk about Stevens in my exchange during the Q&A before I don't think so no so I Haven told you that okay so um on Strike Force 5 uh the episode that David Letterman appeared um you know Stephen asked him a couple of times he said you know because Dave actually threw it out there saying well I've been I've been on all your shows oh except for you John and and and Stephen said well well no Dave like and and you got to wonder how much of that is telegraphed and how much of it isn't but at the same time you heard if if you listen back to it and perhaps I'm imagining it but I asked Stephen about it and and he did confirm it I you hear Stephen go well Dave I I haven't you haven't been back to the to to the to the Ed the would you be open to coming back to the Ed Sullivan Theater and you heard you could feel the trepidation in the voice whether or not it was pre-planned that he was going to ask that or not and one of my questions for him um when I talked to him about it was I said were you were you nervous asking him about that and um he said absolutely he was he was totally nervous about it and and I gotta tell you um I really want your opinion on this because I think about Dave's return to late to The Late Show um and that night and it felt like a big time moment it was the entire night like they they scrapped the First Act comedy piece it was literally Dave given Dave three or four segments or whatever it was he was part of the musical you know obviously he had the national there brought them out they sang his favorite one of his favorite songs um space invader Dave was part of the whole night and and it was a big moment it was so cool and they even did the you know they filmed another segment which they just showed last Thursday the question I want to talk about that in a second um that felt like a big moment and it was huge it was so good and then Conan comes back to The Tonight Show and they give him two segments but to me that was a missed opportunity that they could have had an equal something of of of an equal type moment on The Tonight Show and I I just look at the two the way the two franchises handled bringing back uh their original signature stars and um I just thought I thought it was very interesting the difference between the two yeah I never really thought about it um but yeah I mean the Conan thing was fun but yeah it definitely I mean it got media coverage and and it was um fun that he was back but you're right it didn't um it didn't have the same thing maybe I I guess cuz Conan I mean cuz con was did he get the Tonight Show for 10 months or something like that but just the fact that he had for 14 years he was in the studio across the hall yeah I I I don't know other than I enjoyed for both but yeah for the Dave thing was like it was one of the the first times in a long time that I was like I 100% need to watch this when it happens and it was amazing the only show I know that um I don't think Dave has done at 11:30 is Fallon right is it because cuz it's The Tonight Show is it do you think it's just strange maybe for Dave to go back to the show that he wanted so bad it's still called The Tonight Show it's still in the tames he's never been back he was he went to Jim he was on Jimmy's 12:30 show right but never that's right he's never been on The Tonight Show has he no I don't think he has um I don't think he has since Carson and it's interesting too because you know Paul in the band has been there and it's and and I loved that night too that was a beautiful beautiful I hope I hope they get to do fantastic I hope they do too it is it's one of those things where I I mean Leno invited Dave to come back wanted him to be a guest on the before he left and Dave wouldn't do it and uh I just don't know if Dave has this thing where it's like The Tonight Show was my dream still and I just don't want to go back I just I'm waiting for the day that Jimmy is like I don't know something I nothing bad happens but he has to take a day off or something and then Dave's like this is like this like this the guest host or something like that or or a guest host on Fallon or like not guess host on Kimmel or something like that I mean that would just be amazing to have him come he'd be as good as ever it's one of those things you don't want to come back unless unless you um are still at the top of your game and he still is he could do it effortlessly and people with bobit and that's the thing where less is more you know uh you're talking about and I I want to talk back to guest host in a second because because Kimmel like Kimmel again this is showing that you know if Conan is that giant John Stewart is that giant Kimmel is certainly now on the way to it because he is at that place where he just you know he doesn't give any more Fs in the sense of no I'm going to take the summer off no I'm going to have guest hosts and I'm not going to feel even a little bit intimidated that if I have David Spade on that that that suddenly the network is going to be going oh well let's bring somebody else in instead and and that you know that Larry Sanders bit the idea of the paranoia of the guest host um but to go back for a second to Dave to that that previous point one of the things that I think we're really enjoying now with Dave being at the place in his career and you alluded to it is how good he still is he's still at the top of his game when he was on coar a few months ago there were so many people out there saying oh we got to bring him back he's got to be back in some capacity to do this I think Dave has um mastered the art of Les's Moore uh kar's questions uh the the the coar questionnaire whatever it's called whatever the bits called came out a couple of days ago they filmed it obviously back then and and you know Dave Jerry Seinfeld asked Dave this uh during their Netflix exchange you know hey what's your what's your favorite chocolate bar um and and because Dave has been so private for so long the less is more thing every single time he lets out a little tidbit about his personal life people are like mesmerized by it when Seinfeld last his favorite chocolate bar uh growing up and Letterman said was and still is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups he got a they all everyone applauded everyone applauded the other night same thing what was the first concert you ever attended the Beach Boys everyone applauded happy to hear that's a good point I mean he was always like that even from the NBC show in early CB has any personal details he would talk that's why it was so strange when he went on with Barbara Walters that summer leading to CBS talking about his girlfriend at the time and her name and just but when he would talk about like what he did for the weekend and stuff always Carson would talk about his personal all the time yep on the show what he was doing he would talk about his wife or things that they that they did um yeah Dave just um that there was definitely like a a mystery like this olora kind of like Bob Dylan and stuff um a little bit where you just you have no most of those other people like Jay I mean is so approachable always in public and um not much of a mystery um whereas Dave it was definitely there still is Mystique to the guy 100% but yeah that's it's it's just it's different it's kind of cool but yeah when Dave opens up it's always a treat the yin and the Yang of him and Carson was was so interesting um like you say you know when Carson was going through something I mean how many divorce jokes did Johnny Carson make about himself throughout his career you could probably you could probably create a half hour episode of something just in that like he he was always talking about that sort of stuff Dave never did um another contrast and I'm super curious this is one of the questions if I if I ever do have the the chance to have him on one of the questions I I I have for him is looking at his post Late Show activities and and as far as I'm concerned he and his team have done a a master it's it's a master class in in how to be a Statesman in something after you've done something for a long time um I am so curious you know they've been written it's been written about many times that that that that last sort of experience that he had with Johnny before Johnny started getting really sick you know and and seeing that Johnny um basically left his last real appearance was on Dave's show uh when Dave was was was filmed in La um and then he left the spotlight entirely you know and and and I wonder if Dave looked at that and said you know what I see where you are post show and I don't want to be that so I am gonna have my foot my my my toe in the water and I am gonna like is that a was it because of seeing Johnny and where Johnny was at that Dave decided to stay working I think so I think I I could be off but I thought Dave said something to the effect of what you were saying that it just he once he he said I'm not coming back just he slowed down to a point when he just didn't want to become that um just it just it definitely affects your energy and just like but I would just think like vitality and stuff but um in terms of um Johnny not coming back some of it had to do with his physical appearance cuz he quit smoking and gained weight and he just didn't want to be seing just looking um different and people thinking about um him being different so I think a lot of it was just um the physicality thing um but I think he would have been maybe a little open a little bit more and stuff but um yeah I just love I mean I was my friend um Matt McCarthy just did a a thing um yesterday on on Tik Tock which I don't do Tik Tok but he's text texted to me about you know because it's been 32 years since Johnny um retired it was yesterday and he played um he took his VHS tape which I still have my VHS tape from the last show that I taped and just showing the clips and stuff and um and then it goes he talks about the the the the Dave tribute show to Johnny which I I've talked about many times I was there and just when Dave reveals that all the the questions were Johnny um I I went back and I believe those jokes were from February of 2004 to like October 2004 I think that's the timeline for all those jokes and then um yeah he started getting um really sick and then died in um yeah in January of' 05 but I believe that's the timeline for those jokes that's interesting I didn't know that I'm I'm glad you said that you and I did talk about um the the Johnny tribute show on one of your previous uh appearances here um I don't think that that fact came out that's interesting that they didn't just go through the entire catalog um I don't I think one of the only things that was dated about that was there was a Clinton reference and I I wouldn't even call it dated because you can still make fun of Clinton today and it's still is that guy you're talking about Evergreen boy oh boy Bill Clinton he's got that uh he's got that quality when it comes to being a a punchline um but I yeah it was it felt it felt fresh it did not feel dated and you go back and you watch that tribute episode at that point and you think about it back obviously it's dated now because it's you know 15 years or 18 years or whatever it is since then but but even back then it didn't feel dated and it was so sweet the way that he did reveal that at the end um oh man up in the stands just like tearing up I mean I could feel that that energy there and it was um I'm kind of glad that Dave was on vacation at the time so they had a little bit more time um because Leno I think the first show back it was like right after Johnny had passed they have Ed and Rickles and um and newart and uh ktie Lang who did such a marvelous job um tribute but it just was so quick and I feel like Dave having a little bit more time just to reflect um I thought that that was really good that help the time in talking about Johnny um it's interesting how you talked about how you know the quitting the smoking his appearance um and it's it's ironic that I'm saying this to you the host of the Carson podcast uh but imagine if podcasting was a thing in the early 90s like can you imagine what Johnny would have done in that Medium um happy he would have loved to do something or he could just talk to scientists and I mean the people he would go out with dinner in terms of the guest and stuff was always the ecological guys it was always like a Carl San yeah Jim Fowler Dr Paul erck who's um population control and he always those are the people he wanted to to spend time with um after the show and have dinner with and it wasn't it wasn't the big star movie stars I think that says a lot and I think Dave if he actually did get together with guests which I I don't know if that ever happened maybe it did it would probably be I know he did the one Rickles dinner probably didn't want to do it but did it um but um I'm sure it would just be some of those guests that Dave put on that um wouldn't have gotten on the 11:30 shows Dave was just curious they wrote a book or they just um yeah race card drivers or whoever but um old comedy store guys dreon and Altman and guys like I think so I want to ask I just did you hear this about B Midler um was just on um I guess David diovany has a new podcast about failing about failure and bet Midler was talking about how she just um her biggest failure was her CBS sitcom and she said something to the effect that she told Dave that that was her biggest failure was that CBS show and in my head I'm like unless I'm completely wrong and I could I don't think that bet was ever a guest on Dave's show I mean she she did the the film festival but she wasn't in studio with him as like a sit down guest I could be off so I was like all I remember is Dave insulting her um on the on the show um when Goldie Han was on there it was a yeah I don't I'm not gonna say what yeah but Goldie was such a great guest like okay anyway yes that was I I remember the episod you're talking about I'll just say it so she comes on and and she's like I think they were just in the mid either first wife's Club just wrapped or it was coming out or it was that and he was like what was it like working with B Midler did she try to steal your donut at all or something like to that effect and I'm just like so I'm guessing there's something going on between met Midler and Dave or just Dave's like she's never GNA come on I don't know what it was but um I just thought that that was interesting that Midler said that she told Dave that um and I just I was like maybe talk to the Don or something but I didn't realize that she ever was on and um she would go she went on Charlie Rosen was talking about the Clinton jokes after the whole Lewinsky thing and she didn't name Dave's name but she's like I don't think um the Carson would have been doing that that um that some of the other hosts are I mean definitely talking about because there's no other host other than Leno and um Letterman at the time but I think she was more referring to to to to Dave about that but yeah talking about the idea yeah no it absolutely is um actually next time I talk to will I'll ask him about that as well he'll have an interesting because will Lee played with her early on in his career he toured with with with back in the day and yeah she interest and F I mean in terms of talent oh my goodness and love talking to the people that um worked with her that knew her and uh still tell me it's it's uh it's not the easiest thing to be friends with her which but Trailblazer like like and I think somebody absolutely absolutely somebody who does that though many times they have to be you know if you're the tip of the spear you got to be sharp you know what I mean like and and she in many ways was the tip of a spear in in her and and Sandra burnhard I think would would be also an apt uh you know comparison as well um you know you you have to have a bit of an edge to you if you're going to be Trend setting and you're going to be you know breaking new ground and and certainly bet is one of those people that that could be that and had this you know it's so funny the again the cont the yin and the Yang of Dave and and and Johnny uh in my opinion the BET Midler moment for Carson which was unbelievable and to this day if if I watch that if I watch the last Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and and and I watch you know I have a little bit of time before that segment I don't just sit in and watch that segment but I watch maybe the segment before and then it comes back to bet I tear up every single time if I can put myself in the moment I tear up every single time you know what I do it for with Dave Adam Sandler it's so funny when sord got up and sang that song There is no better men than our hero I still sing that sometimes I can't get that out of my head yeah my goal is to one day have him on this show to sing that damn song it is that was such a beautiful song and it was beautiful moment yeah that was his and he said the truth he told the truth what everyone else was thinking um I thought that that was yeah phenomenal um it was funny but it also made you cry like it made you cry and and it's so cool those things can't be they cannot be Manu whenever I've seen talk shows try like cheffy Chase's first show with goldian trying to manufacture that and it's whenever they like force it and it's it does not work no or nor nor McDonald would be the other a song it wasn't a song though but but you know if you're talking about somebody who comes up and does a set and I mean from the moment he comes out you know I don't want mean to brag but me and Oprah are making the same money tonight like like that was just and then and then to go into that you know eight minutes or whatever it was it might be in my opinion it might be one of the greatest standup uh talk show appearances ever I love it yeah the whole story of it apparently the night before bombing he was not doing well was either that or the day before or the day before that going out and just the set was boming and he was nervous out of his mind and Norm is like the coolest I I don't know whenever I've I saw him Panic once at SNL uh an update didn't didn't do well um but normally if like it it he was just either way he like ah I don't care but um just the fact that I mean it's Dave and He does care beyond and that that that it played so well and that's so Norm it's like once it's like the performance is there he just knocks it out of the park um but yeah go back to inside late night absolutely absolutely I want to go back to inside late night for second year because you've already done it um you've already sort of alluded to some Norm stuff in the episodes that have the two episodes that have come out oh yeah we're gonna do more a lot more oh there you go you took the words right out of my mouth I hope that that is a a rabbit hole we talk about Norm a lot on this show obviously um yeah yeah that's a r you're gonna go down there's there's themes um there's just things that all the shows that never been talked about but definitely within the realm of Norm um yeah I don't know why they've never really been talked about but yeah that's I mean that's the whole goal with my show is to tell those stories I mean I I recorded with Smigel oh my goodness we did our first one was like an hour and then we did like two hours and 45 minutes so it'll probably be like three three episodes divided and it was like one thing after another of reveals and my dopamine is starting ah head yet and you know it's just like those things that I don't know about and um there's definitely within Norm there's um yeah within him there's a bunch of that type of stuff that we're going to exploring um definitely SNL stuff that it's just amazing to me baffling to me that the show is so been covered and that there's stories there that just have never that are so big that have never really been touched or talked about I I don't get it um so doing that and then I mean listen I would love with with Letterman to um to get Barry sad and I mean that that's his name right like the yeah I asked him to do I I um try to get him on I haven't heard from him but like i' love to talk about things that hopefully don't get talked about much that people it's hard to get people on that don't um that haven't talked already but he'd be one person um because you you you haven't talked to him have you I mean he did like a college thing you and I can have a you you and I can have a conversation off uh okay so so yeah there's there's there's stuff there but also there are also impediments as well I'll talk to you that's what happens all the time with with the Carson podcast you just never know what's going on with in people's lives and their stuff but yeah he he's like the one person I'd want to talk to like I'd love to talk to Jude Brennan but there's no way that's going to happen she's not going to talk to anybody and then the only other person I'd really want to talk to but I still I don't see it happening is Lori Diamond I think other than Dave Lori would probably be my number two uh you know what's funny I I reached out I don't even know if she got the message or not because it was based on an old um contact info that checky gave me but I I I threw it out there saying look um I would love to have an episode with you just about the jackets nothing more we'll just talk about the jackets because I know how the design of those things were so uh they were actually pretty meticulously uh like they were made with love like my wife I talk about my wife she cooks with love and that's the intangible ingredient right it makes her her food so good and and those jackets were made with love and everything that Lori did on that show was like I mean to the nth degree of of of what she put into it she put everything into the dedication that she had um but I even said you know if we want to you know put a fence around and just make it to one subject I'll just have you on and we'll talk about the jackets I think that' be a lot of fun we could go hour easily about that yeah I mean she definitely one of the high up people told me she was basically running the show running day for years and years and years and um yeah I mean she definitely would be amazing um did you have any experiences with her when you worked there I um I had just she was in my office just once and she was nice to me and I saw her another couple other times and she was always nice they got us they I think they bought us lunch once was which was a big deal and they sent down something and lower like you work hard you should get some and um she doesn't know that I worked hard but she she assumed right I guess I tried to work hard I don't know but she was nice to me um and then like I just remember back in the day at the NBC on the audience waiting on the seventh floor should come by and said hi to everybody and introduce herself and business card and she's always was helpful I was like how do we get tickets to the C CBS when you guys move over and she's like here's my business card just send me um yeah so she and then I I would love to talk to the sangles I don't know if they would talk um there was definitely a wasn't easy for them I don't know if we've talked about this I mean There Was You know you're there they were there for so long and trying to keep Dave happy which we all know uh is a challenge um I'd like to talk to them I don't know if me too have you asked them already have you asked them oh yeah um and and and and and again it's funny like like I think there's just there's a few people out there who are so cautious and a few of those people I've gotten to and and and become friendly with both either been on the show or behind the scenes where they're so cautious about it because um look we've talked about being the headwriter the head writer position on this show like John Beckerman came on and he did such a good classy job talking about you know that position rough I talked to John about that yeah yeah absolutely and and and being the head writers for so long in the way that they did it in the transition of the show like I mean I a show I I would love you know how Conan used to put on the show on his TBS show they used to put like the outtakes and the rehearsals and they used to make that into a show it was like a clip show that they did it's one of my favorite I love the TBS show before he went to the half hour format or whatever I I really enjoyed that one did a phenomenal job on that yeah yeah I would watch a show of the sangles during rehearsal you know where one of them's behind Dave's desk and they're and they're they blocking the show and and all that they just released a clip of something about that on I think released it on the Channel I think actually of the sangles doing that the St one of the stles behind the desk and they were prepping for something and it might have been actually it might have been one of the sangles that actually released it but anyway it it's I would watch a show of that because behind the scenes stuff is always welcoming yeah they were there I mean I got there I when I was there in like 98 99 they were already there had been there like a year or two and then they stayed up until almost the end um so yeah they have the stories I just um it's just I I just know it wasn't easy so I I get there um I don't want I'm not putting words in their mouth not speaking for them but maybe hesit Andy to to uh to talk sure to either of us I I don't know I'll certainly invite them at some point and maybe they'll talk to me I'm I'm I'm not sure but um definitely in terms of longevity and holding that gig it's remarkable that they did it for that long yeah it they did an incredible job but at the same time when you're the head writer um you're going to make you're you're you're going to make friends and you're going to have uh resentment you're going to have like it's it's a thankless job in so many ways because you're getting it from the top but you're also getting it from you know um from from these creatives who just desperately want to uh well please Dave please the show get something on and these are creatives at the highest level in all of these departments and and you have to say no to so many people for so many things it is a real really tough job and um true you know it's it's it's it's it's interesting to hear the perspective but also I can see why those folks would be so guarded but when you got guys like us who just want to know like let's talk about the good stuff you know we don't necessarily have to talk about the salacious stuff we could just celebrate the stuff I yeah I just not even like I don't care much about the salacious stuff it's more of just like just the process of how they they did it and definitely I am interested in just like the a little bit of the backstage about how I mean tough that the gig was and stuff like that and just maybe their Dynamics I feel like it could be talked in a certain way where it was um because I've done this before with people and stuff where I'm just kind of just talking about it without making the stuff personal or anything yeah um I don't know I think that they the fact that yeah that they were there for that long I I hope they they end up um talking talking to you they um yeah for sure um in terms of uh yeah it's amazing that they did it for that long and um I remember seeing maybe one of them previously at um a sketch show when I first moved to New York one of them was doing um I think been Eric I forget and stuff but it was their dream uh to work there and just the fact that um yeah they were there for that long I hope uh I hope that they'll talk us if you talk to Rodney at all you talked to Rodney right rman Rothman not yet you talked to Rodney Rodney's great he's on the list I need him too he can definitely speak to how tough the gig was I mean I think he was only there for maybe a couple years a tough I can't even imagine to be 20 freaking five 25 and just to be um have that gig and stuff but um as far as head writers let's see uh odonnell uh donic uh and John um yeah Matt Roberts that's it I think and then we got the sangles in the middle and Rod Rothman no no because Joe topplin tolan's coming on we're going to have Joe topplin on here oh was the head writer for the CBS show wow okay for a little while for a little while they in and uh and so that's another interesting you yeah absolutely I can't wait for that um you know in in a brilliant brilliant mind talk about another one too like like like it's funny the headwriter position and the other one too the monologue Chef I still hope one day to get Chef I've got I've still got hope that he'll come on one day oh Chef is f phenomenal I just love the fact it took him like he was so persistent it took him like seven years or whatever whatever it was to get the gig but opening remarks I mean oh wow that's it's not we talk about being specialized and people that can knock that out like mahalan Barry and and sheft yep and um Chris belir there's certain people that just yeah not a lot of could do that the episode that was gonna come out today uh which is now bumped till next week sometime is um I spent a bunch of time with Gabe abson Gabe was there when I was there I loved Gabe he was the nicest he yeah he he got some great stuff on yeah oh yeah and and just talking about we went through some of the the keepsakes because you know have a Big Show in t guy I love that stuff so we went through his apartment some of the keepsakes that he has but then he told a bunch of process stories and he's been on the show here before but it's different the imperson thing and I want to get back to that with you in a second um and talking about inside late night but but Gabe yeah just the monologue writer um the head monologue writer you know again another very very interesting position um in that show and and and it's funny if you look at Gabe social media now still to this day you'll see the big Facebook post and you know that it's a the economy of words is good if if it can all be in bold and you'll see Gabe just throwing jokes out there and they are 100% in Dave's Voice still and it's so interesting that dichotomy and seeing um seeing these people who think in that way Steve Wier he's still he can he can go into Robert Klein's voice like that and he actually does a pretty good imitation of it so listening to Steve talk and actually say like a like a Robert Klein joke and imitate him while he's doing it is just it's fantastic and God I mean it's been it's been 20 years probably since he wrote for Robert so just just really interesting um you're doing your podcast now you used to do a lot of them in person right with the Carson podcast I did but I did it because there really wasn't the technology like back in like when I started like 2013 I start released it in 2014 where it was good enough to be able to record like we're doing right now so I would um do them in person a lot and I I I certain people I would love to do in person I think ideally I'd rather have the connection and be in person but I've done everything remotely and it works and I just I'm working on I mean I have other projects and it's just like if it if it happens organically like somebody's like I'm in town or somebody's around and it's just like do you want to come over and I'm around I would but um yeah as of now um haven't done any of them in person and I listened to them both on on the Apple platform are you doing the video for the Spotify and all that as well like is it going to be like what we're doing here or is it going to be straight up audio we've recorded some video I'm not really sure what we're going to do some of it um we're just starting so some of it doesn't didn't um record some of the guests and stuff but I think we'll be doing some stuff with some video um yeah we'll see what happens and stuff but I would like to to um to Branch out um a little bit uh a little bit on that I'm excited about it um I'm I'm I'm really excited you and I are doing this at the same time oh I'm stoked oh God I am so stoked about this Mark um thank you yeah like it's so great and again like late nighter it feels like it feels like a family is forming whether it becomes an official family or or it's just it's just cousins to each other Fox old buddies or whatever um I love that we're keeping this thing alive and we're cele I too yeah there's some definitely there's definitely Dave people I want to talk to like I don't know if you talk to Andy kenler but I'd like to talk to him just reached out on Insta but I haven't gotten his I would love to have Andy on yeah there's certain people that because am I you know more than I do about this but is is there anyone else that Dave would send on remotes that was an outsider that was a comedian that just a standup that Dave would just like send out I don't think so I don't think so either I would I don't think so like might have been earlier I don't because on he did most of his remotes himself he didn't do it or sent Calbert somewhere or sent you know he might have done maybe with one or two if but I'm not aware of it but yeah I'd like to talk to to kinler um I'd love to talk more Talent coordinators I know that you am SAS would be would be one that would be close to that I would think because yeah I mean Amy would be great I've met her before and we've corresponded and stuff when I worked at the co bear report she was over there a bunch of times cuz she's good friends with Stephen and they started together in comedy yeah but yes Saras I think you're right he sent her on a couple a couple things like when they did the the 400 a.m Show 4 show for sure uh you know so that there there's probably an example of sort of but not the way that he did with with Andy though Andy was a he was did you ask Resnik did you Adam did you ask oh my God I just reread Adam's book again oh God he so oh it's so funny and I want to ask oh I've got so many questions about that you asked I I haven't reached out to him like again it's a contact as you know it's a contact info thing for me it's just a matter of I've just let it sort of happen organically and organically I've been able to put out at least one episode a week from the very beginning and the contact info just sort of comes in you've helped a couple of times with that so thank you for that yeah I know it's nice when that happens with the contact info when I started with cars and that's exactly what started happening people started just giving me stuff and it's already um um we the news that this thing came out was just a couple days ago and I've already had people um falling at your feet I hope that's what it is people want to be guest n i mean there's some people that already are like if you need a guest and you know I've worked for this this many shows and stuff so that's that's nice I mean it's not what I expected I mean the fact that like I've been asked to be in I mean what today's what Thursday we're recording this my thing came out Tuesday I've already been asked to be interviewed four times on shows and you were one of and I was like really you want me back this is so nice I didn't expect it it made me feel like a million bucks and I just all the hard work getting this um this thing ready when just like I don't know if any if the people are going to be happy that are excited at all for this and if this is if I'm just you know sometimes the comeback is just I don't want to say this is comeback because it's different it's different enough than what I do with Carson just the fact that people have welcomed me um just with so so much warmth and stuff and enthusiasm means a lot yeah I you know the the thing that and I don't know if I'll have uh eventually the same kind of regard that that that that you do uh but one of the things that you inspired me um for for is that you did the Carson podcast with no outcome except for the process itself I zero I don't think anyone would talk to me I had didn't yeah that's what you you're doing and it's amazing how many people um you should ask Chris Elliott um not to be not to I know you've asked him to be on I've asked him to talk to me but not to talk about himself at all but to talk about other people that he worked with on the show or maybe um that might be you know and it's been a while um because I know he won't talk about himself he doesn't like talking about himself like a lot of other people but if you can get him to talk about other people that were there at the show and like like Joe fuy or whoever and stuff and get like his his take on like other people that were I would love to see Chris Elliot with you I'll tell you this you talk about elusive folks having Chris and Adam on at the same time would be unbelievable if you can make it happen you should ask them and and that that might be the next maybe Chris Elliot would do it at that would do it for that has said and I don't think I'm telling Tales out of school he said if he's promoting something if he has something to promote he said he'll put our show at the top of the list which I thought was a very sweet thing say I just thought it was like he didn't just doesn't like really talking about himself well there's that there's that part of it which is which is you know and I and I said look people are like that but I want to talk about their lives I want to talk about what they're doing now like like we're about to do a listening party uh with Ste Steve Young's got a comedy album coming out yeah I heard about that yeah we're gonna do a listening party for it I want to you know talking about um you know Chris Harris doing Frasier I I'm so happy seeing some of these folks and and you know who who who made their bones at Letterman like Carter and Craig like oh my God how I met your like it's just so great to see that and I want to you know done a lot of them have done very well yeah and it's the spider web that goes out it happens organically um it's such a beautiful beautiful thing and and and I'm so glad you're back because you get to come back and and and and uh you had that break and and and you're coming back with a different like the idea that you're gonna do all this stuff about nor McDonald like again I'm gonna see what I can do I mean my knowledge of the SNL stuff is definitely as I mentioned is there and un explored territory um I do want to go on record that this is the filthiest I think I've ever been on any podcast say the word frecking and only because I'm I'm exhausted and I've been a little under the weather so I think it's just that but I know for me people make fun of me that I would mute the swearing and stuff but I always wanted my thing to be familyfriendly so like as people would say that they would listen with their kids in the car and stuff so this is me that's the edgiest I've been and I didn't mean to to do that so yeah it's just me being the tone is that going to change like like is that what look like when you have well I don't know we'll see what's GNA happen I mean I Chris Rock on if you get Chris Rock on are you gonna are you gonna censor Chris Rock I don't know I always my my rule was always like if it can get on network television I'll keep it on but like it was always the stuff that we took out was that you couldn't say on Dave show you couldn't say on anybody's show yep and I was I wanted to do a network television um kind of like keep it to that but we'll see what happens on on something like this I mean it's if it's some from somebody else's mouth perhaps maybe we'll be a little bit more um tolerant but I try to be um clean in terms of my what I say and like Gaffigan rean es um but gazi for that matter yeah yeah so um but we'll see I mean um yeah just just you know what the it's but the podcast thing is just somebody told me it's a pretty known well TV writer that they're like when before I started the Carson podcast they're like Mark this is going to change your life because I wasn't sure if I was going to do it and they're like you got to do it this is going to change your life and it really did and I feel like the same thing happened with you and I oh yeah it's in process aming like if people listening ever if you have any thing in your head that you want to start something like this I highly recommend and can be um a witness to this and I would think he's going to greate we had no idea what we were doing at the impostor syndrome thing forever and like I who am I to be doing this I don't know what I'm doing driving the school bus like a fourth grader driving the school bus what am I doing type stuff but it does go away and it gets easier um and it's just the rewards are just so great um and I highly recommend anybody if you're listening and you want to do something like like that just to pursue it and uh you just never know what's going to happen but in terms of like what happened to Mike and with with me it's astronomical in terms of what's happened you are are a sweetheart knowing how to finish up an episode that is a perfect way to that's a perfect way to finish it no it is because I I completely attest to it um and I I don't say it nearly as as well as you do your Ted Talk is well by the way when you talk about you know you do something without an outcome you do it for the joy of it um the sentiment you just expressed right now and and and boy don't worry about the outcome just enjoy the process be present during the process and see what happens see what it develops uh could not agree more uh when are you dropping inside late night is it every Tuesday right it's gonna be every Tuesday and I do want to mention that I have um two episodes with Rick shackman that I recorded that never were released so we're gonna get those ask you you're gonna put those on yeah I mean we're gonna get them up at some I I do want to say also that we're Mark bless your heart for that yeah there he is there's the man you know we we are going to be doing patreon hopefully sometime soon and we're going to have bonus episodes and perhaps maybe some of the Shey stuff will go there I'm I'm not really sure it's been a while since I've listened to it and stuff but sheer was I know super supportive of you and myself and I miss him and um yeah he's uh beloved by so many people so oh you're a sweeter for mentioning Shey at the end of this thing um yeah I love you man I I'm so so grateful for this here is there anything that you want to throw there so uh later.com everybody who hears this through their ear holes or sees it through their eyeh holes go to later.com subscribe to the newsletter you get every morning in your in in in in your email you will see um highlights of what happened last night uh on all the late night shows a nice little Roundup any changes that are happening within the industry um you know for example you know uh uh after midnight is is changing their format a little bit well who was the first person to cover it it's it's Jed and his team at late night EXA of course um and they're building their podcast stable as well uh they got a couple SNL ones there and now inside late night is there hey who knows Letterman podcast may be there one day you never know oh my goodness you never know you never know they'd be so happy to have you I would guess I I in a second in a second and uh I just I just love this collaboration thing so inside late night every every uh Tuesday on the Apple the Spotify all the podcast platforms whatever subscribe on them all everybody come on um and uh what else anything else to plug at this point here I'm going to be doing I think a little bit more of late night stuff that I've um on my Instagram which just Mark malov is my handle and um just because I have the photos I mean I was going to Dave's show when I was in high school driving up three and a half hours from Hershey Pennsylvania going to Saturday Night Live I was there at Conan in the infancy so just that more documentation and stuff and things I've saved over I think on Instagram going to be um having a lot of late night stuff that I think people will will like that's the high profile stuff but you've also got the lower profile stuff that people haven't heard of talking to Rachel dra you talking about her her show that you went and saw you know five times for five and I still yeah dra and Fay was the show at UCB in New York on 22nd Street and Rachel had been on SNL for a season and I had seen Tina and Rachel perform at Second City in Chicago and Tina um and her it was the the best sketch show I ever saw and they did it I think seven times in New York and I was there for five I just after a while I was like I gotta let someone else see it it would sell out every time and they would just be out on the sidewalk hanging out afterwards and people I was always too nervous to go up and say hi to them and stuff but just um yeah I remember one of near the end or whatever yeah Lauren was there and stuff and you're just like to see this guy in this this theater on 20 second through it used to be I believe a strip club and it was it was definitely that's when Tina got up it was a month or a couple months later that she got update but just to be there for these things and to see people in Chicago before they were fully formed and stuff I definitely have some some fun stories to be there and just to uh see the evolution so yeah um and and yeah the width and breadth that's that of knowledge and experience that's in your head is just it's unparalleled oh thank you and you yeah no no it's the truth and you're an inspiration to me um talking about Tina Fe back then uh this is a thought that came to me when you and Rachel were talking um you know Superman became Superman when Clark Kent took his glasses off Tina became Tina when she put hers on uh which I thought was interesting I thought about that during the episode listening to you and Rachel talk about that um it was very very interesting how these things evolve it's amazing watching you evolve and what you're doing you will always have a faithful supporter in me uh not just me but our show as well and anything I can do to help you um absolutely anytime uh I'll uh I'll say a real quick outro here and then you and I can say our goodbye privately um yes go ahead no no no say go go say your thank you thanks for having me on no it's great to see you and you messaged me yesterday I think which was like the day after I released and have me on so soon is um is really really kind I appreciate the encouragement and the support oh Mark you'll always get it um and I mean you're not on enough as far as I'm concerned I would have you on once a month I I just I I Adore You uh we adore you you know uh Mark was one of those guys who right at the very beginning encouraged not only did he Inspire through his actions and what he did but he's one of our very first guests um and having mark on and seeing him back L L Cool J said at best don't call it a comeback he's been here for Years Mark malov watch inside late night um and and and it's just uh it's it's great that there is so much celebration going on of this thing that we love so much this uh whether it's Letterman itself or the broader perspective obviously on this show we talk about the broader perspective a lot uh it's so in line and it's so great to have somebody out there doing that uh one sponsor one sponsor only so far with Letterman podcast hey maybe late you know what let's just say late nigh.
