Episode 188 – Vancouver, Part Two: The Show ItselfEpisode 188 of The Letterman Podcast picks up right where last week left off.In Part One, Mike, Len, and Rob recounted the unforgettable experience of meeting David Letterman — and even Paul Shaffer — before Dave took the stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver for his sold-out conversation with Zach Galifianakis. This week, the focus shifts to the show itself.Len and Rob join Mike once again for a one-of-a-kind report on a one-of-a-kind evening, as the three of them break down the entire event from top to bottom. They discuss the surprise appearance by Paul Shaffer, the tone and rhythm of Dave’s conversation with Zach, and a delightfully odd, very Andy Kaufman-esque bit that Zach may or may not have sprung on Dave in real time.If there’s a more complete account of this Vancouver appearance anywhere online, we haven’t seen it. This episode may well stand as the most definitive recap of the night — a David Letterman enthusiast’s-eye document of a truly special show. For David Letterman enthusiasts, this is the kind of episode that preserves the magic. Before you go, make a stop at Hello-Deli.com — the one and only home of official Late Show with David Letterman merchandise, lovingly kept alive by the legendary Rupert Jee. Yeah.

Hi, I'm Paul Shaffer. I'm Will Lee. And you are watching the Letterman podcast.

Welcome once again to the Letterman podcast. My name is Mike Chisholm. All right, we're doing part two of David Letterman in Vancouver where we're actually going to talk about the show. I had a few people reach out to me and say, "Hey, we feel like we got ripped off a little bit because we want to hear about the Vancouver show where David Letterman went and talked to Zach Galifianakis and Paul Shaffer was there and there were a whole there was a whole bunch of Canadianna involved. Yes, we talked about our experience meeting him, of course, the Wolf Pack of Five, James and Paul who didn't make the first episode, but Len Lenny Bruce as he goes by these days, dropped the Goldberg, and Rob Stover, we got together and we talked about when we met Dave and it was a massive experience for us and so yeah, it deserved an episode. It really did. But now we're going to talk about the actual show. Dave in Vancouver, it was fantastic. We're going to go over some of the bits and uh yeah, it was a it was a beautiful show.

But that being said, I'm recording this on March 10th, 2026. March 10th, 2026, March 3 years to the day that our boy Rick Sheckman, Shecky, the guy who if this if he did not exist, nor too would this show actually. Producer for Late Show, they call him the film coordinator, he was a producer for Late Night and Late Show with David Letterman for 32 years and I mean Rick was the guy that I became close with on the staff. Um you know Well, Arty and and and Rick were the two guys that I became close with right away, but Rick was the guy who who kind of really gave me um Permission isn't quite the right word. Uh sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, but it was more than that. It was he gave me um his support. I asked Rick if he would be uh my consigliere uh for the show. Rick Anybody who knew who knew Rick uh knows knows that he was one of the world's most foremost cinephiles. Um you can go back and I've got a couple tribute shows to Rick over time.

But today is March 10th. He left us. Uh tonight after I finish recording and editing this episode for Friday, I'm going to go upstairs and I'm going to watch um which was the unbelievable um it wasn't a service. Uh it was it was a tribute to Rick at the Film Forum um in the heart of of of downtown New York City um a few months after Rick passed and uh everybody was there, you know, virtually everybody was there but we whether it was video or in person. Um if you if you want to see some really heartfelt but also hilarious clips from a lot of Letterman staffers including like Chris Elliott and some of these other amazing uh folks that we we all look up to um and appreciate their their their skill and what they've contributed. Uh go back and watch this.

It's on the Letterman YouTube channel. Um it's the uh Sheck Fest. It's the tribute to Rick Sheckman. There's two videos on there. There's an actual tribute to all of his stuff that was in the show and then there's Sheck Fest itself which was recorded um and produced with love. The people who produced that um show they produced it with love. So very very appreciative of them and um I miss Rick every day. Um his uh This was Rebecca, his niece, gave this to me um that day after the after the service and and and uh um I'm really appreciative of that. I miss Rick. I think about him every single day. Um just Oh, there's our boy. There's our boy right there. Rick, wherever you are, I hope the films are good, really good. Um or if they're not good, I hope you have a venue where you can talk to people about where they're when they're not good. Um that being said, I do believe Rick would be smiling at the adventure that uh myself and other people who enjoy this show.

Uh and then uh another, you know, 2,700 other people in Vancouver at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre um back on February 18th got a chance to see uh Dave and Paul and and and their presentation um and a conversation with Zach Galifianakis. We're going to review that show right now. We've got some little clips that people have sent me that are going to uh we're going to inters- intermingle inside of here. Uh but at the end of the day, thank you very, very much for the people who have reached out for us coming back. We appreciate that. Please enjoy the review or the uh the report, I guess, of the Vancouver David Letterman show uh with myself, with Lenny, and uh with Rob. Enjoy. So, when we get in there, um again, thousands of people all congregating, the energy was crazy. It was super, super, super cool. Um I was in the second row. And uh I had a really cool exper- I just want to say to everybody who who who There were I don't say everybody.

It's a small handful of people who kind of grabbed me or recognized me. I sat The guy sitting behind me um at least knows about this show. Like it was a He saw me I was standing up and I was pointing up in the in the in the balcony to you guys. Um James I saw and and just and just waving and all that sort of stuff. One of you guys got a picture of me looking up and and waving, which I thought was really, really, really cool. Um and uh that was that was excellent. And a couple people were sitting beside me were like, "Oh." And and and I said to one lady, "Do you don't you want to know spoiler?" And I showed her the picture of Paul and I. And she's like, "Paul's here?"

And it was so cool. And um uh you know, we can get to the show itself. Dave said his own intro, and it was an unbelievable He introduced himself to come on stage. I I saw him do that a couple years ago in California as well. And he just basically starts reading down, and you can tell it's Dave's It's You can tell it's Dave saying it. And he's talking about uh he's talking about the the the the scandal happening in the curling in the Olympics and things like that, and it was a very Canadiana uh inspired introduction for himself. And then he introduces himself and comes out and gigantic standing ovation. Olympic curling team, two-time world champion, gold medal winning curling legend, Mark Kennedy. I would like to address recent cheating accusations from the Swedish curling [laughter] team. I've been accused of double touching.

Everybody knows I don't double touch anything. Just ask my wife.

By the way, if you Swedes are looking for something illegal, how about those IKEA meatballs?

So, once again, to Sweden, their curling team, all Olympians, Scandinavians, and home viewers, [ __ ] OFF.

ALL RIGHT. ONE MORE THING, HOW ABOUT THAT GORDIE HOWE BRIDGE?

LET'S GET THAT SON OF A [ __ ] OPEN.

What do you say, Trump, YOU DUMB [ __ ] AND NOW, please welcome former mid-level American TV celebrity and 1981 Daytime Emmy Award winner, Dave Letterman.

Gigantic standing ovation to the point where Remember how before the show ended uh when he would come out for the monologue the the the ovation that he would get was extended compared to what normal Late Show with David Letterman was was was like? It was that except way more because you've got five times the amount of people in the audience um and and it was it wouldn't stop. And you could see Dave was very uncomfortable with how long the ovation was going. Um the people of Vancouver so so grateful and excited to see David Letterman on stage. Well, so I'm up in the balcony with my wife and she and I were at that last show. And if you remember and CBS did not edit it down to 1 hour, they let it run to 75 or 80 minutes. So Yep. they showed the whole standing ovation. And and I think I even said to her I said he's going to do the joke. Well, now I don't have time for the giving away the the cars segment, you know? Cuz I said well, it's the same thing. Yeah, I just just the uh outpouring of love which was great. Mhm.

Um yeah, I felt something different with that ovation. The we sat with the reception to Dave which is that there's a bit of a different kind of a love for this guy. And everybody here feels the same as me which is that Dave was actually our our friend and and so many people. He's our TV friend. He's our best friend on TV. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he he really was. I mean, he helped me get through uh some tough times. He helped me get through university. He helped me uh you know, get through uh you know, being a loner in a new city. There was something about him that was unlike any other entertainer. And I know every other all the other 2,800 people in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre genuinely felt the same way. This This guy just wasn't an entertainer delivering his set, his comedy set. There's something about this guy he related to us. Um, and he was our friend. And that's what one aspect that distinguishes Dave from everybody else who's been on the silver the who's been on the little screen.

Yeah, I I totally It's just It's It's It's um the best friend on TV thing, I think, is is is one way of putting it. The other, though, I think about Dave when he talked about uh in 2005 when he did his tribute show to Johnny Carson after Johnny passed. And and one of the things that he talked about um I don't know if it was in the monologue or if it was with Peter Lassally. I'm not I'm not certain, but but he uh he said he said, you know, what a I think it was almost like what a privilege or what a thing it was to have Johnny Carson kind of finish your day and put you to bed at night. And that was great that he felt that way about Johnny. My father felt that way about Johnny. I get that. But Len, I could not agree more with what you just said. Like I think about some of the things I went through in my life I've gone through in my life and how at the end of every day it was just like, okay, a little bit of regularity and hilarity and and and and insanity and and and and and weirdness and and all of those things wrapped up into one.

At least I could kind of count on that. And I know it feels like in in in many respects it still somewhat feels like I've been rudderless a little bit since 2015 because it was it was a it was ritualistic watching that show. And it wasn't the way that late night is now where it's so divisive. Um, it wasn't really like that. The only division was if you didn't like silly, then perhaps this wasn't the show for you, but they were unapologetic about who they were and the show that they made, and it left such an impact. And I think like like for the three of us, you know, who are who who who would be put into the into the the much uh, you know, uh, more enthusiastic enthusiast than many of the people that were there. The people that were there, I felt almost like when Dave walked out on stage, it was almost like a homecoming. You could feel that a lot of people in there were like, "Oh, this is going to be good. And and and and it's so great to see this guy here."

Um, and and and that ovation again was was absolutely incredible. Um, Dave then went and did a uh uh as as as Len talked about a a montage of of his history. And I mean, here's where where Walter Kim was in there doing his thing. And by the way, a couple of times he said during the during the night, uh, "Roll it, Walter." And and I just think about Walter Kim and and and where he's at right now in his career and and and all the things. And and you think about the roll it originally was Hal Gurney. And and the idea that that Walter gets to be that guy uh, for the on stage stuff, I thought that was awesome. Um, what do you what did you guys think about Dave's uh interpretation of his career up to this point? Do you think he had to be convinced to do the Mary Tyler Moore skit, or did he has he like really come past it just like, "I got to put it up there. It's the greatest It's the and it's like he's got to put it up there." So, they put up Bruno Gerussi. Um, and then shortly after that they put up a another couple clips, a Mork & Mindy clip, they put that up. And then they put the the the Mary Tyler Moore uh dance number with Michael Keaton and Dave and whatnot. But but the thing I loved about it is it played right to the end. And at about 40-50% of the clip, you see Dave going, "Okay, that's you know, okay, okay." And it just keeps going and going and going.

HE'S OKAY, OKAY, AND they literally let the entire clip [laughter] play, which I thought was fantastic. Um yeah, then I mean, you know, they went into uh they went into late night. Uh they went into the morning show, showed the Bill Murray clip, they went into the late night, showed the Bill Murray clip. Um and then uh

his Harry joke of uh

I'll put that up cuz I love that. I've sent it to Irene already. On the last uh late show with David Letterman, uh they said, "Oh, and I'd like to thank my son Harry." Uh or no, no, we never did a chan- get a chance to put up the the picture of my son Harry. And they put up the picture of the kid smoking. Yeah. And and and what it's just a beautiful awesome awesome picture. Well, they did a sequel to it. My son's now 22 years old and here's a picture of him and it was that picture except changed to now like it was a new version of it. I got a picture of it. I'm going to put it up here so so so we have that. I don't know if I've shared that with you guys yet, but I have a picture of that uh that I took um personally. Not that I not that I took any uh uh a video or still pictures in there. Um Cuz that's not allowed. Not allowed, apparently. Apparently. Um now, they they they uh they saw me, but they didn't they didn't say delete anything or anything like that.

They were just like, "Hey, hey, just don't don't." I'm like, "All right, no problem." But I already had a bunch of stuff, so um I'll put that up. Yeah, so he did that and then um that's when they shocked the audience because there was a grand piano on stage. The two chairs were there, but there's also a beautiful beautiful gigantic full-size black Steinway and Sons uh uh uh um the grand piano there. And there's only one person that's going to do that and he brings Paul Shaffer out.

And the place again goes absolutely nuts, right? Is that or was I the only one that that that felt that way? Oh, 100% yeah. Cuz I you don't know who's in the audience. Like, did they ever get a chance to see Dave, you know, and then Paul? That's just the icing on the cake right there, so. Yeah. Yeah. And back in Canada, um so they bring Paul out and it's a huge thing. And then they bring out and I forget I'm sorry. I was going to get her get her name and and and bring her back, but a gal who sings the national anthem for the Vancouver Canucks. Yeah. And they bring her out. Thank you very much. Say the name again, Rob. Elizabeth Irving. She's actually a mother, so. Thank you for that. something, yeah. But she's great.

Appreciate it. She's Very, very good. at games and she's done a lot of big events, so. Yeah. And uh a big a huge Canada flag comes down from the middle of the room and and we all stand up and we sing O Canada. And and um you know, Dave did a Dave did a lot of jokes on the way out about the state of affairs a little bit, you know, making fun of Trump, making fun of some of these other things and and and and and uh um it was almost like I don't even know I don't know I don't know if this makes sense or not. I'm going to bounce it off you guys for the first time. It almost felt like it was a little bit of Dave representing America saying, "Hey, I'm sorry for all the stuff that's going on between the two countries." It kind of felt that way to me. I don't know how it felt to you guys. Dave Dave knew that guy when he was the king or whatever of New York, all around New York. He had him on his show many times.

He's he knows his deal and then suddenly Dave doesn't have his show in 2015 and all the stuff that happened after and yeah, I always feel like he's probably been yearning. At least he has the Bar Mitzvah game show to to say stuff and he's had some fantastic, you know, takedowns of that guy. And um I I totally agree. Like that that was an opportunity and the audience completely laughed it up, you know? And well, you know, we'll get to Zach Galifianakis who's basically a Canadian. Like when you when after they saw the show, you realize this guy is a Canuck, so. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. I think Yeah, I'd love to know and maybe you've got some understanding of who approached Dave to be part of the Just For Laughs or was Dave looking to do something in Canada and the timing worked out? Like that's where I'm not I don't know like whether Zach Galifianakis is uh was not the original guest, but at the same time you know, he lives in BC. He lives on the Gulf Islands which is like it's yeah, he kept saying during the show it takes two ferries to get here. Yeah. Um but yeah, I'm kind of jumping ahead here. You're talking about the other stuff, but uh No. I wouldn't be surprised if Zach was the the intended guest all along. Yeah. And he certainly delved into stuff which I as a parent and everything was 100% on board with and Mhm. he yeah, he was it was a quite a thoughtful discussion, you know, into that whole extended uh interview. Yeah. Lynn, do you have anything anything on that? Um yeah, Ron, you raised maybe the most intriguing question surrounding Dave's return to Canada.

And if I still was an intrepid journalist, probably the first question I would have sought to answer is how did they get Dave? Yeah. Mhm. Yeah. I No, it's it's I mean, Just For Laughs Montreal, that's one not anymore, but in its heyday, Just For Laughs Montreal was it globally. Now, Just For Laughs Vancouver, it's it's a beautifully produced event. I'm so impressed. But, how did they get Dave? Well, and it's 10 years and I mean, I've been to I've been to the Just For Laughs Vancouver a few times JFL and I've I've I've seen Bill Burr and I've seen a few other ones as well, but yeah, I do believe that they are expanding every year. Um I was able to see a couple of comics the night before. The The Daily Comedy News podcast, uh shout out to Johnny Mack and and what he's doing there. Highly recommend it. They actually credentialed me to go and see a couple of comics the night before. Uh that was a lot of fun.

And um [clears throat] you know, I got to tell you like um to me it's a perfect fit. It's a it's an absolutely perfect fit. Like any of the festivals that go happen and if there's JFL Montreal and and and these other places, the idea of having Dave have a conversation with somebody who is a giant in comedy, to me, that is like, you know, it's it's it's chocolate and peanut butter making a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup to me. It's it's it's such a It's such a no-brainer uh of a move. And and it's cool because like the JFL like all of the all of the marketing material around it, he headlined the whole festival as far as the way that they showed the lineup. And to me, it felt like that. It felt like a big event uh that meant something.

Dave obviously having the badge of honor as well as he comes out, was able to put up the tweet that Donald Trump put up not too long ago about him saying that he had Whatever happened [laughter] to David Letterman, he looks terrible, no talent, or whatever Whatever Whatever it was.

And I mean, you know, Dave was able to to to make a lot of hay out of that. And I mean, um it I'll talk about, you know, the idea of the tensions that might be uh being felt, whether they're real or imagined or or or or a little bit of both. Obviously, the economic stuff that's happening between Canada and the US, it really felt like Dave was releasing pressure out of a balloon that we're all kind of feeling emotionally. And and and [clears throat] and um if perhaps back in the day he was that guy who would put us to bed at night, I thought when he came out before he brought Zach out, I felt and it's the weirdest thing, it felt a little bit almost like reassuring. Like reassuring that we're not alone. Reassuring that that that that that that our neighbors to the south, um there are members of our neighbors to the south who who who who don't enjoy uh what is happening as well. And it it felt It it did. It felt very reassuring to me. I don't know about you guys.

Uh yeah. Go ahead, Naughty. It was uh Well, I know I I I I'm I've made my mind up long ago. I'm going to defer to Rob. That's That's a tragic decision, but okay. No, yeah, I'd love to know how many people drove up over the border from Washington and stuff to see this show. Like, yeah. But, no, yeah, I I Yeah, I think you're you're spot-on. Um and Dave's love like he said it before the preamble for doing the national anthem. Like, you know, he said, "I've always loved this song." I love And I remember that. Wasn't always great like Paul would you hear O Canada the first few bars and stuff and and Dave would play it on. So, yeah, I felt, you know, whether it was it's it was that uh obvious or or intention that he was, you know, uh ex- extending this all over just to say, "Don't worry. We're going to get through this." I don't know. Um but, you know, again, going into you know, when you talk about Zach Galifianakis and stuff, you you learn more about his story and everything and he's married to a Canadian and uh and and how he lives, he's basically off the grid um in many respects. So, yeah, to I don't know. Like, how did that combination come together? We've got to We've got to get to the bottom of that cuz uh yeah, it was it was a one It was a really Yeah.

Just a a once a once-in-a-lifetime thing to this show because it's not broadcast and, you know, we were witnesses to it and and this time, like you say, with all the the tension and everything going on, um yeah, it did it did feel like, you know, Daddy was tucking you in into bed again or something for one night uh the way he did many years ago. That took a weird turn, but okay. No, it That That's kind of That's kind of what it was. It It is that same sort of that that calming that reassuring feeling, but also insanely entertaining. And I mean, the Oh my god. Like, if we didn't even get We haven't even gotten to the to to to to the bit yet. And I know we're all know thinking We all know the bit that I'm talking about here cuz there was a moment in this show that was just like like this is the part of this episode that we're doing here that we will clip and put out to talk about this part here. After Zach came out and after they started talking and there was a bit there that I was absolutely flabbergasted by and I'm going to talk to you I I talked to Jerry Mulligan about it yesterday and I'm going to I'm going to share that here with you guys here today but a little bit but um but yeah like like I could not agree more.

He brings Zach out and and I I think I think you're right. I you hit it real well Rob. The idea that Okay, so why is Zach here? We're happy that Zach is here. Obviously Dave and Zach have a rapport because Zach has been on My Next Guest. He was on one of the special episodes of of of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction and it was a phenomenal conversation. It was great. As far as I'm concerned this one here absolutely left that one in the dust. It was it was Oh was it good and potent and and and funny and all of those things. But yeah Zach has a connection to Canada through his wife and and and and amazing that they they made hay out of all sorts of stuff including the fact that you know Oh yeah, my wife's Canadian and the place goes nuts and it was so great. Oh yeah, but she's from Calgary and then a bunch of Canuck fans start booing immediately. Yeah. Out of like a Pavlovian type of cuz Calgary and Vancouver have a very very contentious rivalry in the NHL and so you mentioned Oh yeah no no she's from Calgary and the whole place just starts going crazy and you could tell the delight that Zach took from that which I I I loved as well. They start going through some stuff and uh uh they they didn't show any clips at the beginning there did they? It was a little while into it before they showed any clips. Yeah. No I'll jump on that.

Yeah Zach came Zach came locked and loaded with his he was pulling out little Canadian references and you know he had to explain to Dave that basically Calgary is is Canada's Texas which got another another great response but you know when you're name dropping Vicky Gabereau audience like I had not heard that name in many a year and that's was just hilarious. So, you know, Zach Zach is definitely a BC boy now, you know, he he was definitely you know, he knew what worked for him. Yeah, you can't fake that. Like like when you're I'm born and raised here in BC and and the things that he was talking like somebody who was also born and raised here in BC like very every single observation was was was on point and authentic. By the way, Dave you know, some of the bits he did I don't it's weird because it's not like it's going to come out. It's not like it's this is a one-off. You know, I I don't ever want to spoil comics bits.

But but if there if it's a one-off and it's never going to be said again, you know, like Dave going about the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Oh, it was named after her after her amazing you know, 15-month run of whatever. [laughter] And and and oh, it's just such a such a good bit. You just reminded me you reminded me the joke that I didn't think about until we saw the show. Like now when Dave goes in to check into a hotel, he's checking in as Stanley Park. OH, I DON'T WHAT A GREAT JOKE. You just reminded me of that. I know

it's the best. Stanley Park. Oh, my god, that was such a good joke and Zach Zach calling him on it too. Like again, this is a little bit of his Canadianism. He goes he says to him, "Your Stanley Park joke was incredible, you know?" And and I just I love that so much. Yeah, that's a that was a that was a great one. And you know, I I have a note here too. At one point I'm in the second row, right? And I like kitty-corner to me at one point Zach comes out and gives a $100 bill to a guy in the audience. That was a real $100 bill by the way. It was a real $100 bill that happened. Was it the same guys that were late that showed up late? It was the guys two down from them. It wasn't it wasn't the guys who showed up late. Guys who showed up late were right in front of me and I was pissed when they showed up cuz it was like the front row right in front of me and I was like, "Oh, I got a perfect view." and then it got a little less but not much. I had a I had a I had a phenomenal seat.

But yeah, that was that was that was so good and and and Zach talking about "Oh, we get to the Should we get to that bit? I don't know if we should Is Is it time to get get to that?" So, Len, anything else up to this point here before we get to the the bit? No, I'm good. All right. So, they start talking and they're going back and forth and it's a beautiful thing. Oh, I got one more thing. I got one more thing before that. For years, every single time somebody mentioned British Columbia on Late Show with David Letterman, every single time somebody mentioned British Columbia, um Dave would talk about, "Oh, it's beautiful out there. It's God's country." When I had my conversation with him, he I he said that about British Columbia. But many times he would say, "Oh, and I just love to go over to Victoria Island." Yes. He had said that so many times. And like like so many times. And as I say that, maybe Canadians listening to this, uh first off, what's wrong with you? Second off, you probably remember that, too. "Oh, I love going to Victoria Island." He said Victoria Island and without missing a beat, Zach's out of his chair saying, "IT'S NOT VICTORIA ISLAND. IT'S VANCOUVER ISLAND." And he And he was Oh god, it was so funny. It was so good.

And it was like one of those things that that that for years I wanted to say that when I would hear Dave say that. And it is confusing. Victoria is a city on Vancouver Island. It's the capital of BC. Uh but, you know, somebody who's not really paying attention and lives elsewhere might not be aware of that nuance. That was a lot of fun. I enjoyed that moment. Uh but now let's get to the bit. Um And and correct me if I have it. Just to make sure, I'm going to do the setup before we get to the actual bit itself. Dave and Zach are having a conversation about their family members who don't appreciate their senses of humor and when they try and deploy their senses of humor, they're like, you know, you know, Zach, does your wife like when you do bits? No, my wife does not like when I do bits. You know, basically they seem like their their family didn't think that they were funny at all. Um And then Zach would talk about his growing up, his formative years, and how he would always be trying to get the laugh from his mom.

And and and how um the thing is it was confusing because sometimes she would guffaw. Like you would get she would just guffaw like like like she just an involuntary laughter that she couldn't help no matter how appropriate the material was. Um but it was confusing to him because sometimes he would say something with in front of his dad or his uncle or whatever and he would say something and it would it would get the guffaw from her but then he would get in trouble. And so it was like this weird sort of a uh you know, is this a good or a bad thing? I'm not I'm not sure. Uh am I right about this? Is that that that's that's the setup that I remember? Is it are we there? Yep. Okay. And then it takes a turn. And I mean I don't know that that the emotional weight of this night is so interesting. Um it takes a turn because Zach starts telling the story about this joke that he told and and and and it made his mom it made his mom he goes it made my mom guffaw and he and he stops.

And he kind of goes and he kind of chokes up a little bit. And then he tried to continue and he's like oh. And he goes I just I I just uh just one second. And and I'm in the second row. Like there's a freaking tear coming out of his eye. Like I'm watching him tear up. And I don't know if you guys heard it or not because he said it really softly but he still got a microphone on. Dave is like oh and you see Dave's energy change. And he kind of gets a little uncomfortable he goes oh is this is he goes he says really softly this is this is real. And Zach is just like and there's a pause and I mean for me the pause was excruciating. I don't know how many how long it was it was it was 5 seconds or 15 seconds whatever it could have been the same could have been longer. I don't know but it was it was this And then Zach tells us I just lost my mom a month ago and the whole place just like I don't know I just felt the energy is aw.

Cuz it was such a beautiful conversation up to this point. And then suddenly the emotional weight of the situation comes in and the whole place was like the empathy was just nuts. And they talk a little bit more and he he talks about this. And then then what? I'm just kidding, my mom

My mom's alive or here or something. My mom didn't My mom didn't really die. Yeah.

And the whole place was like like like like Yeah. Really? [laughter] It was like And then they said a couple other things to each other and he goes, "No, no, no, really, my mom did die." Yeah. And and it was like He doubled down on it, yeah. He doubled down on it and and and again everybody is just oh and and you don't know, you don't know if he's if he's serious or not, but Dave kept referring to it. Oh, it's not as good as a dead mother bit and he he kept a couple times he would call it back, but almost in a So, I will throw one little thing out and I don't think I'm breaking any confidence. I have it on there I have it Someone told me that that the group of them, I don't think Zach was there or Zach wasn't there, I should say. The group of them went for dinner afterwards and they came out of that dinner not knowing I'm talking about David and his and his people. Um they came out of there not knowing if Zach's mom is alive or not, which made my night when I heard that.

Because that's an Andy Kaufman type move. And I called Jerry Mulligan about it yesterday and we kind of went over it and stuff and he started to cuz he knew Andy of course and and and he started he talked about how you manipulate and I'll probably get a clip of it. He let me record the the clip so I'll probably take the clip and and and and put it out there, but he talked about how Andy would be able to do that and you're you're bringing people between two emotions, empathy and laughter and and and these other things and it's a device that gets used. That's a very difficult device to use. Zach used it perfectly that night. I I I just I was To me, that was my favorite part of the show. Uh I don't know if you guys would say the same thing, but I just absolutely loved that moment. But do you You're saying Dave had had no inkling of this that this would happen beforehand. This whole thing wasn't staged.

So, the way that I understand things, which could be completely off base, the way that I understand things is that at the beginning of of of of of the morning show and late night and in its inception, everybody recognized how amazing Dave's wit is off the cuff. Just off the cuff. Just It's It's It's It's the most amazing thing. And so, they would The idea was, "Well, let's surprise Dave for some things because then we can get his natural reaction and it's genius. It's hilarious, right?" The unfortunate thing is Dave does not like surprises. And so, a balance had to be found. So, like I've got the picture of Andy Kaufman back here with Jerry Lawler being slapped. Jerry Mulligan was a segment producer that night. He had no idea what was going to happen. Dave, according to Jerry Lawler, he told me that Dave, of course, did know what was going to happen, but he was one of the only people that knew that Jerry Lawler was going to smack Andy Kaufman on stage, right? You want as few people to know as possible, but at the same time the host does not want to be surprised.

So, let the host in on it. He's still going to act like he knows about it. I don't know. You two were there. I don't think he knew. I I don't personally think that he knew. Zach did not go to the rehearsal. Um you know, it was it was one of those things I don't think he knew. What do you What do you guys think? I I I agree. I don't think he knew because by Dave's own admission, he cannot act. I cannot act. I've taken acting lessons. It's not in my core muscles. I can't act. Dave, he can't act by his own admission. But you were there. And and you're saying it it it was too subtle and it was too real and too nuanced for Dave to pull that off. So, so that it it looked like he actually didn't know. And do you think he would have been No, he wasn't pissed off because it it was a it was so rousing. So even though Dave does doesn't like surprises generally speaking, I'm sure he appreciated that one. But yeah, I would guess from what you observed, Dave didn't know.

I wonder if there was a framework to the whole like, you know, okay, we're going to talk about your early days and then we'll go to The Hangover and to Between Two Ferns and everything and whether whether is that kind of said, you know, I do have one thing I'm going to say and that was it. He didn't really, you know, um tip his hat to what he was going to do. Yeah, I'm not sure. Cuz then, you know, we got Schindler's List later on. Oh my god, that Oh, there Okay. That is another another absolutely jaw-dropping bit. Like it was such a good moment. There was so much substance this night. Oh, 100% Yeah. It wasn't just fluff. Because of the the Yeah, the Oh my gosh, the Schindler's Yeah. Again, how I I had a hard time believing that that was the truth. But by the time that the Schindler's List bit kind of came through um and and and I mean if it Do you feel Do you feel okay kind of describing that, Rob?

Oh gosh, if I get it right. Who was It was a relative's and now I can't remember.

Mhm. Yeah. Well, it had to do with Spielberg directed two movies in the same year in '93. Directed Schindler's List Schindler's List and Jurassic Park. And I I Dude, I can't remember exactly the setup cuz I was sitting there same time with my wife, is this a bit again? Is he Is he doing it again? Mhm. But at the end of the day, he's with a Holocaust survivor. I may be totally off here. Mhm. And then uh like the grandpa or something or yeah or his wife's something

story was inspired by and it was somebody attached to the story. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. So they were in, you know, and he didn't talk he never talked about the Holocaust. It was so, you know, such a traumatic thing and and a lot of folks who went to Oh, yeah, no, he was the one who the little kid played him.

Yeah, that's right, right. So, then they went to the McDonald's. And they're sitting in the McDonald's and, you know, the Schindler's List has come out and everything and there's a Happy Meal for Jurassic Park. No. And And the guy And he said at the end of, you know, the punchline is basically I just, you know, I just hope they don't make a Happy Meal of Schindler's List. Or something like that. I totally blew it there, gentlemen, but uh No, you didn't. That was it. Like like

I don't think any of us expected that that's where it was going to go. Yeah, it was great. And I think Dave, you tell me cuz you saw Dave much more closer than I could. What was his Did he just Was he like just killing himself or was he like

Oh, I thought I thought I thought he's like, okay, yeah, he landed it. Yeah, he landed

It's hard like like to land to land some of this stuff like dead mom, hard to land that. Holocaust, you know, hard to land that. He landed it and I think that was I think to me that was part of it. That was

Yeah. Um So, anyway, those are those were some of the the real highlights that I felt. I'm glad you brought up that that bit as well. Yeah, going through Between Two Ferns, I'm glad they showed the Jennifer Lawrence clip. That's one of my favorite clips of Between Two Ferns of all time. If you, you know, do yourself a favor after this is over, go watch Between Two Ferns, watch Jennifer Lawrence. There she does a line in that that is just absolutely spectacular. I'm glad they showed that. They showed a few of the other one a few other Between Two Ferns examples as well, including one where where where it was Dave and and Zach in Between Two Ferns from the from the movie. If you haven't watched that, I mean, it's it's it's weird that Between Two Ferns is old now, but it's it's it's it ain't new. And if for those of you who haven't seen that, you got to you got to go watch it. It's one of the one of the greatest things. They're short. Every episode is short. Uh said, and I mean, that's what I love about Dave. Um he prepares for his for his guest. He takes it very, very seriously.

Um again, we talk about the curation of this show. Uh you know, and I think we've shown that he took it very, very seriously. And um uh the uh he said he watched The Hangover. He watched every episode of Between Two Ferns, and it was it was obvious because the references he was pulling out, you could tell it was it was it was right there. Um And uh and and really at the end of the day, that's where they went into these clips. And and then you know, the role of Walter um and and would show another clip would show then then showed the clip of The Hangover. And and they talked about that, and he talked about the character there and how much of it was improv and how much of it wasn't. And and Zach talked about Todd Phillips a little bit. Um and so that was that was that was awesome cuz he was talking about the people in show business and the things in show business that he likes. Uh Zach obviously likes being a performer. One of the things that he does not like is some of the things that come with being a performer like living in LA and some of these things. And that was where Zach got really, really serious about how uh how he's feeling about times right now and how what what what's going on.

And this is where the show actually had a metric ton of depth to it. Talking about where we're at as a society today and what's going on. Uh what were some of your impressions about that stuff, either of you? It really spoke to me cuz you know, with with kids and he's talking about the challenge of getting kids on their phones or when they should be in in social media and I I eat all I eat all that up, you know, and uh and especially when you're hearing especially from like Zach Galifianakis or just you know, that kind of performer. And that's what I love about comedians and stand-up comics. They're the they're the most they're the truth-tellers, you know, they're uh you know, the jesters, the one who can tell the king that he's a fool and stuff. And you know, I had just watched Hangover like two nights before, realized I never saw the sequels. I only just watched Hangover 2 yesterday and realized I never saw it. I don't know why. But Hangover great and like like you know, watched a bunch of Between Two Ferns. And I was like, "Yeah, dude.

Yeah, Zach Galifianakis is you know, he's great." I never got into Baskets even though you know, that was supposed to be fantastic as well. Um But yeah, no, when it it went into that and that's again that long form that Dave could not do in 6 minutes or you know, two segments or whatever on the show. He relishes that. And we relish it as well. Like cuz now my next guest is a long but like you said, it intersperses with you know, him and Jason Bateman throwing baseballs or whatever and stuff where it goes back to the the interview part. We got the whole interview for an hour plus or whatever you know, that that was and um The show was over 90 minutes, I believe. Yeah, yeah. Uh I could have taken more of that. I I could have taken more of him really going into his worries and and again, whether that comes to the is this was this a strategic thing Dave saying, "I'd like to go to Canada. You know, I'd like to get whether it's Martin Short who would have been brilliant as as always, but I I in hindsight having Zach was was was even better cuz I don't remember seeing that guy interviewed for the longest time. Like I don't know what he's done.

He's been off the grid. Like um living two ferry rides away from Vancouver and and I know those ferries. It's uh you know, it's a it's a journey to get to to Vancouver and stuff and and he's keeping his anonymity and and you know, the people in where he lives know where he lives, but he's you know, he does his thing. Um And yeah, I that wasn't a bit like him talking about his genuine fears and apprehensions of where we are as society and with you know, what's going on globally and everything and technology technology. I mean, dude's a Canadian. Like he's he's basically uh seeing it from that lens as well. And then having him speak to Letterman was was uh was just great, yeah. Len, anything on that? I'm just curious how he got in. I mean, you were there at what time, Rob? Like 1:00? I think he showed up after we left and got some food or When we were getting food, that's when he showed up. Yeah, cuz he really had no reason. He could have showed up right at 8:00 cuz there was the national anthem, there was Dave's uh video montage and everything, so yeah, I I could have seen that he got there when the show began is you know.

Yeah, nothing to do but sit down and talk and get his mic done and everything, so yeah. I'm glad you mentioned cuz again, it's one of those things I'd totally forgotten about some of the bits and everything and and you reminded me of uh I think he he he joshed on Smithers like Dave threw out Smithers, BC or Oh, it was so And that's somebody called him about that. They said, you know, it's usually Surrey is what what we get cuz we're

in Vancouver, so Smithers was a bit more of a deep cut in terms of uh you know, where to go there, but um I was hoping that someone would um alert him to the idea that we have a town called Grand Forks. I just I just the idea of the Grand Forks and uh and and and what they might be. To me, Grand Forks would be something that might uh uh might rouse some curiosity, but Smithers is Yeah, Smithers is is is the perfect Automata poetically, Smithers has always I've got some clients that live up in Smithers and uh and they're a different folks, too. Um I can tell you if there was anybody in the room who had any connections to Smithers, they would have been delighted to hear that because it does have It's got a Simpsons kind of ring to it with uh Mr. Burns and Smithers, so Sure, absolutely. Yeah, there's a familiarity there you know, with the with the vernacular and and um yeah, it was just I I uh I was in awe of their chemistry and I mean, that is just a credit to both uh Dave's preparation and of course, I mean, he's a master at. But I mean, I saw him a couple of years ago in in in in in LA um and I mean, he was he was having a similar conversation with Tim Robinson. I think you should leave a comic he was a writer on on on SNL. Um, I think By the way, I think you should leave on Netflix. Phenomenal phenomenal show. Highly highly highly recommend it.

Um, and it was it was it was formatted in a very very similar way where they would would take clips of the show and then go from there and and and where did this idea come from and where does this um, you know, it it was really good but it was very it was it was really really awkward. It's it's What does that person bring to the table? It was an awkward interview which I loved. I absolutely loved the the the conversation they had because of because of the awkwardness. But this one was exactly the opposite. It's like they had a flow with each other that that they've had for years. You'd never know that it hadn't been years that they had talked or there there hadn't been a pre-interview or something like that. It was it was so natural and um, and they seemed to mix very very well. And Zach, to his credit, absolutely no fear in telling Dave off in you know, whether he was performing or whatever, which, you know, you could see people being potentially intimidated there.

Zach had absolutely none of that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I had that thought too cuz I had seen a little Netflix bonus episode. And that seemed more kind of promotional too for whatever the show and so whether they he did kind of map out a general, you know, this is where we're going to hit or something. If not, it just it's kudos to Dave like he he's he's an expert interviewer and uh, you know, in being able to stretch it out and really let his guest like he always knew when to let the guest shine and he didn't step on the laugh or anything like that. And yeah, I mean, that's you know, we always wanted to see more of Dave like I think I said last time we spoke and just, you know, I love those moments in Dave in his later years when it was just Dave beyond the desk not doing the monologue but he's he's just going to announce tell a story. And you you those are you know, those are just gems that came out of that.

Yeah, that was always my favorite part of Late Show was was the first segment after after the monologue where he just would do stuff at the desk and there might be a comedy piece or it might not. It might just be Dave talking about you know, his weekend. But yeah, that was my favorite part of Late Show. At least probably I don't know after might be after even as early as 9/11. Certainly after '05, '06 and then when he went into the into the the don't blame Conan years. That that segment was was was by far my favorite part of the show. And this just sure seemed like a lot of that. It was it was a it was a beautiful beautiful show. As we're closing up the live show, Len, am I missing anything? Um no, I'm good.

Okay. Um and finishing the show, I mean I don't know why this happened. Um I don't know why it made sense, but it kind of did. Um they decided to finish the show and I think I the way he framed it, it seemed like they were getting them to sing a song to Zach and Paul came back out, got behind the piano and he sang It's Raining Men. And he he played it Oh god, I love watching Paul Shaffer play the piano and the angle that we got, we actually got to see him really tickling the ivories. He was going for it and the flourishes that he had um as he as he as he played and performed It's Raining Men and who knows why, but he they did. They performed It's Raining Men. And he went for it and the audience was way into it. The energy was high. I mean, when you listen to that song, it's got a lot of it's got a lot of punch to it. I certainly felt it and it felt like a really cool way to end the show. How'd you feel about that, Len?

I mean, Paul hasn't lost a step. No. With his dexterity, with his energy, he hasn't lost his step. Mhm. Both of them are just uh they seem like timeless characters, Steve and Paul. It's remarkable. Think of all of their love of their craft and their and and their sense of purpose in bringing joy to people has so much to do with the fact that they're they're so enduring and they're so youthful. That's just God, 40 approaching half a century for Dave. Paul and you Paul goes back to the early '70s. He was started out here in Toronto. I think what was it, uh, was it Hair? What was he? Godspell? Godspell. Yeah. Unbelievable. And when we met Paul, he doesn't like they they don't look they don't look their age, you know? They just seem like

No. I said this the first time I met Paul in the flesh. I said it to Will Lee. He has this youthful vitality about him that is just absolutely, uh, it's it's it's it's infectious. I absolutely love his energy and he still has that same energy today um, that he had back then. How how how fun was that, Rob, when when he started playing It's Raining Men? Like, what did you what did you think about that? I knew it was going to be It's Raining Men. I just knew it.

Yeah, me too. Yeah. Yeah. That was yeah, that was great. And what was Zach's expression? You could see the little minutiae better than I could. Uh, I saw confusion. Like, when he

Like, at first it was like which is exactly what you want. He's he kind of a GOFF HIMSELF LIKE, WHAT? LIKE, what is Like, what

Um, which again, I mean, I don't know how much of that might have been a surprise. You know, I I I at one point I think he said, "Are we are we are we done?" or something like that and whatnot and then and that's when they brought Paul out or or or after shortly thereafter. And, uh, it seemed like uh, delighted confusion, I think. If I were to if I were to uh, guesstimate the uh, um, the feeling that he was he was uh, he was portraying anyway, it would be delighted confusion. Um, I thought that was a lot of fun. But, that's it. That was the show. And, uh, afterwards, um, everybody who was around me was buzzing. They were saying, "Oh, that was so good. That was so Wow." I I I heard a lot of people like like you talk about getting your money's worth. My word, did we get our money's worth with that show? Or maybe not. Maybe not. Well, I just think about people paying like $600 to you know, see a concert, whatever.

Yep. It was so uh so packed with entertainment and meaning uh and entertainment and and meaning and and sincerity and real sincerity. And and it went on. Well, I I I didn't know if this was going to be 90 minutes or in and out. Mhm. No. Well, yeah. And it it generous. There there is a generosity there and the work that was put in to curate that show uh and the length of the show, it just speaks again to what I witnessed from Dave in person. It is a a generous person who wants to give back. Yeah. Yeah, I would agree with that as well. It was just uh it was per- as far as I'm concerned, it was perfect. Um it is it's I've seen him live a few times now um down in LA and and and whatnot. This was my favorite. Uh and it's not just cuz of the Canada part. Although that's I mean I mean that's certainly the uh uh part of the ingredients of what makes it my favorite, but this was my favorite time that I've seen him live and it was just absolutely incredible. I have a a question for you, Mike. Uh so the preamble, what would you call it?

Would you call it his set? Dave's Dave's pretty lengthy uh unforgettable set for the ages that he did before the interview. Um was that completely unique? That That wasn't something that he modified for Canada? I mean, putting in uh the the clip with him and uh you know, Canadian hero and Beachcomber Bruno Gerussi, um that was you know, I I don't know why he would put that in anything else. Um, you know, clearly he could he could repurpose some of those some of those those bits as well. But, yeah, no, I think uh I believe that this show was uniquely created. I think what we're going to see in LA um, the two shows, the one with with with with with Marty Short and the other with John Mulaney. I think that that's those are going to be just as unique. So, after the show, we go outside and it is um, you know, we're all feeling that same buzz that the audience was feeling. It was just wow, I can't believe we just saw what we saw. Uh, we go down to where we were, but we go across the street cuz that the people are now mobbed. There's a mob out there. Huge huge huge huge crowd that's standing by the stage door where we were, you know, hoping to get a glimpse and and the SUVs are still there.

Um, and I mean, Len, I just got to say, your your your uh your instincts were amazing. We were across the street and we're all just kind of basking in the show itself and what not. There was the SUV, Dave came in. Okay, he's still here. Who knows, maybe we get to see him again tonight. Um, but then Zack's SUV moves and then so too does Dave's. Len, when you saw Dave's SUV move, what did you do? I'm going to go through everything including a personal reflection here and whatever you if you want to edit out stuff You want to jerk. then that's up to you, Mike, but I'm just going to throw it all at you. Okay. Okay. So, I see uh Dave's guy come out. All right, hops in the SUV. Okay. So, I know right away, boom, Dave's not exiting here. Now, I had already messaged you before that. Said, "Where are you guys at?" You said you were coming I was hanging out by the SUV um, not because I thought necessarily that it would happen that the SUV would drive away.

But, I just thought maybe Dave would kind of just skirt along the wall and just like scoot into the SUV and I might be the guy there who had a chance to say goodbye to him. Um So, anyway, so Dave's guy comes out and he starts um moving away moving off in the SUV. And so, I start running after the SUV cuz okay, I know Dave's going to come out front. Um At that point, okay, what order can I do this? All right, I run to the front. Dave comes out. I fumbled that part cuz I hadn't really prepared what I'm going to say. I just I had no preparation. He comes out and I start babbling about my shirt again. Dave, I've I've been wearing 42 waiting 42 years to wear this and he kind of looked at me weird and he didn't say anything and then he he uh ducked into the SUV and I like, "Okay, okay, okay, just say something, show some gratitude. Just show show some gratitude." So, I run into the street and um they are uh moving down. Uh I guess it's he said it's Hamilton. Slowly though, so then now they're stopped at a light for a second.

Um so, they're they're moving slowly down Hamilton and it was actually a green light at that point and I waved and then Dave Dave lowers the window and I'm like, "Oh my god." Cuz I knew he was on that side. "Oh my god, David Letterman is lowering the window for me?" And I say, "Okay, now, now, just express appreciation for Dave." So, I just boom out. I'm on the street. I'm a couple of yards away. Dave, I love you. And Dave points at me. He points and he says, "No. I love you." Just like that. And it it it wasn't sarcastic. It was actually completely sincere, and I just felt like I was starting to cry inside, but I boomed out a laugh because I was just He caught me off guard. He smiles. So, at least it made Dave smile. So, that's that And then I say to Dave, I say, "Dave, you you made my life." And in a way, yeah, I kind of kind of did. And Dave responds because, of course, there's Dave and he's always at the ready with the perfect response.

Well, that's what I'm here for.

But I don't think it's really sarcastic, or at least I don't want to think it's sarcastic. I think this guy really is out there now. Dave's out on a mission to just give, to give and give, and that is his driving force. And that's like a highlight of life. That That is a highlight of my life, that point. And I boom out, you know, "Love you, Dave. Love you, Mary." And I "Love you, too." to the couple other people in the vehicle. And And he dropped

you loved Mary? Man, I'd be terrified to do that. That's crazy. Good for you. Once you told me you're terrified, I figured this is my big chance. You're out of the picture.

Move the big man out of the picture, boom! Glenn, I was really I was really happy when you came back down and showed us the video cuz you got that on video, too. Um and and we could show a little clip of it there of of the window and all that. Um you know, I I I was so happy for you. I was so happy for you. I mean, you flew across the country for this moment. And and and the And I know it was cake. Everything by that point was already just just bonus at that, you know. Um but I was really sincerely just absolutely so happy for you. And and and I I I can't I can't imagine that you have you've you've you've you've stopped levitating the past 4 days. I think you're probably still floating. Well, it's been both. It's been both. So, I'll be honest with you. I You know, I I I try to practice gratitude and kindness. I really do. Then this is something that like you're you're a personal development guide to say the least. And I've been developing myself as a person my whole life. I can't say that I came from a standpoint of the most gratitude and the most giving because I wasn't raised that way.

It's not the way that I was raised to think. So, I've been changing myself my whole life and I'm always trying to develop develop more gratitude, more kindness. Sometimes I think I figured it out. But you know what? I didn't have it totally figured out because even though I had no intentionality of excluding you guys it didn't occur to me in that moment when I saw the SUV moving off. It didn't occur to me, you're running, just pick up the phone. Just say

Come to the front, guys. Come to How many words is come to the front, guy? Yeah, five words. I could have managed. And I didn't do it and I didn't do it not because I don't think I'm a selfish person and I had no intentionality to exclude anyone. But it didn't occur to me because there's another level of kindness. I realized that the mind can be on and if mine had been on just just another level that would have been as instinctual to me as trying to be Johnny-on-the-spot and figure things out and run after that SUV and you had a gift bag. You had a gift bag for this guy and and and I just want to say that uh it was a personal growth experience and I did apologize for that. After I could have done that. I feel terrible. I feel terrible about it. Um and I also think there might be some similarity. I'm being very presumptuous here, but I wonder if there's a bit of similarity in the path that Dave and I have been on because in the little I know about Dave, my impression is that he has also developed his character uh and his and his kindness uh over over the years and decades.

Through life experience. Yeah, I think there's some similarity there. So uh I know I'll have a chance to make it up to you, but I didn't I beat myself up a little bit, but you don't really get ahead by beating yourself up. You get ahead by being compassionate to yourself and recognizing, "Yeah, there there's another level." And you know what? There's always another level. So even when I figure this out, something else is going to happen and I'm going to say, "Ah, I could have been more of a team player." So I I wanted to share that. Uh if if if if I could just release you of any negative feeling whatsoever towards this, I mean, you're you're you're how in the world are you going to have all of these, you know, logical things come to your head? You're it's an emotional There's no absolutely no I'm so glad that you had that moment. I'm so glad you had that moment.

Again, you flew across the country for this, you know, I'm so glad you had it, Len, and and and for not even a little bit, not even a little bit of of what you said is how I received it. I was just stoked for you. I mean, for me personally and I think I think Rob would would would would would echo this as well. I mean, all of our Like, I'm on bonus we talked about this you know, when we were when we were outside the the door when you guys were asking me some some some questions and stuff. For me, I am like way in bonus time. I'm playing with house money when it comes to this.

I really really am. I and I don't need to just look at that in the Letterman world, although I I do. In life. Like I'm turning 50 real soon. And the way that I look at it is I've been playing with house money for quite some time that if life were to go, okay, we're done or take a turn or or or do some of these things I'd be like, well, you know what? If I was 90, I'd be satisfied with the life that I've had and the memories that I've had and the house money is just that's how I feel about my entire life right now, you know, I want to see my granddaughter grow up and things like that. She's seven now. She's my best friend. I want to see that, but if I do it's house money and if I don't cool. Like, it's cool. When it comes to Letterman and you like like like get granular are you kidding me? I mean, I've had so like like like the experiences that I've had um are just amazing and I want to share that.

Like like like that was my favorite part of this whole thing is that people who like this show, we all got together and whatnot and you guys all got to have some of these same moments that that that that some of us myself included who are lucky enough to have had these experiences along the way. To me, that's what I would love to see. I would love to see more other people get the same sort of shine that we've gotten from here who would really really love that because it's not the easiest thing in the world to do that with David Letterman. It's not and and and if he is going to go out and do some more touring around stuff like this that isn't recorded. I just would say to everybody who's out there, if don't even hesitate. If you have the opportunity to go there, it's worth the money, it's worth the time, it's worth the effort, it's worth everything. Go do it.

If if if if you've enjoyed anything that Dave has done and if he does more of these things, I highly recommend going to do it. I know both of you feel the same way, but Len, don't even worry about it. Rob, I I'm sure you feel the same way. Oh, dude, yeah. Lenny, that's that's totally misguided way of thinking. I'm so grateful that you had video of our encounter, like Yeah.

that would have all been just from our memories and stuff, but you've got a wicked video that captured it and more grateful to you, man. Thanks. Thanks, guys. Thanks, guys. You're just uh yeah, you're uh you know, you're you're grateful and uh and kind people. And I appreciate it. I appreciate it. There's uh an energy out there. There's uh change happening in the world. People are getting it that kindness is the way. Dave Dave got it. You guys get it. So, it's interesting interesting times. Without a doubt. We all said the same thing. We all said the same two words in our little 2-minute uh encounter. We all ended with thanks, Dave. Yep. That's I you know, I got the chance to say thank you to John Williams, the composer, 23 years ago, whatever. Really? And to say it to David Letterman, another huge just and that's all I you know, just thanks, man. Like we all said thanks, Dave. And he got that. I think he got we weren't like we said before, we weren't just autograph hounds. We weren't just uh going to sell his signature and everything. We were there all for a purpose and it uh it worked out the way it was supposed to and it was it was brilliant.

Yeah.

Yeah. It was a fantastic time. All right. Uh so, that is our uh recap uh of the wolf the five-person wolf pack. Today, it's three members of the of the pack that were here about our amazing amazing encounter uh with David Letterman. That is an absolutely um I'll remember that, you know, as long as dementia doesn't doesn't take over my brain or whatever. This is going to be something that I remember for the rest of my life. Um and I said I said it that day. Uh I'll say it to you the five the four of you, um, I'm so grateful to have shared that experience with you guys. It was a really beautiful, beautiful time. Um, you know, and and and it's funny, the clip that they showed uh, of The Hangover, um, the one clip they decided to show was the the idea of the Wolfpack and and and and Zach's speech there and it just I don't know, man. It just as goofy as that was, as goofy as we all are, as goofy as these times are, as goofy as the whole situation is, it's felt so apropos. It felt just perfect and I'm just I I can't thank you guys enough for being a part of it and for taking time be being willing to take time out of your lives to come here and discuss it for a couple of hours. Thank you guys so so so much for coming back on the show.

This feels full circle in so many ways. The fact that you guys have been on here before and it just worked out. Um, again, kismet, um, you know, however you want to call it, meant to be, it just it really felt that way and I'm just really grateful for both you guys. Thanks, dude. Yeah, I appreciate it. Thanks. Thanks, Mike. Uh, instant friends. Instant friends. Right. For life. So.

That's Yeah. I look forward to seeing you guys again. More adventures to come. Yes. No doubt. No doubt. Okay. Uh, I'm going to end right here but then just make sure you stick around, okay? Just stick around for a second here cuz maybe there's a chance we can do something else here. Um, so so this has been a lot of fun. I appreciate you very very very much. Uh, we've been quiet for a while. I'm going to do my very best to as I've I'll say in the intro that I haven't even shot yet but I'll say it. Um, I'm going to do my best to get more episodes out. I've got a few in the can and some other things. Just some life stuff is going on right now. Uh, so I appreciate everybody who's who's been um, so patient with with with what we're doing here. Uh, but you've got some great guests that are coming on. Some other bigger things potentially happening. I'm not sur- sure but all I do know is is that I love uh, this thing that we're building and especially the community and that it's a lot of fun to gather all of these people who were scattered all over the place who have the same feelings that we do that that the productions of David Letterman company have impacted in the same way that it has for us.

Len, Rob, thank you so much. This has been another episode of the Letterman podcast with Mike Chisholm. Coincidentally, I am Mike Chisholm. Thank you and good night. Thanks, guys. Love you, Dave. I love I love you. Oh my god. You just made You just made my life. Good. That's why I'm here. I've been waiting 42 years to wear this.

I love that shirt. I love you, Mary. Love you, Dave.

Let let let let let the fun end. They don't talk to me. Yeah. I don't talk to them. Bang. Zoom. All right.
